We’re also impressed that he performs robotic-assisted knee replacement procedures (he was the first one in Scotland, too) to improve outcomes and reduce complications.  

It’s also worth noting that they’re recognised by major insurers like Bupa, AXA, Aviva, Simply Health, and more, so you might lower your out-of-pocket costs.

But as you can see, they only do knee work, so if you have non-knee concerns, then you’ll have to look elsewhere.

On the flipside, you’d have to travel for surgery (mainly France) and spend days away from home for the procedure and early recovery. Travelling can be physically demanding and a hassle, especially for older patients.

Mr John McKinley’s niche is in foot and ankle treatments. He has a comprehensive surgical portfolio in handling conditions like bunions, flat feet, Achilles tendon, and more. 

His expertise in sports injury management is impressive. We learned that he even regularly treats athletes from the Scottish Rugby Union, Scottish Premiership football, Scottish Ballet dancers, and sports institutes. This says a lot about his competence and performance. 

Another speciality up his sleeves is his work in complex hindfoot and toe deformities, and even in ankle stabilisation and arthroscopy. 

Speaking of arthroscopy, his approach to treatments is minimally invasive. In other words, procedures lead to smaller scars, less pain, shorter recovery times, and lower complication risks. 

The downside? He doesn’t focus on general orthopaedics like hip or knee surgery, so if you have multi-joint problems, you’ll have to search some more. 

Still, we can’t deny their reputation for delivering successful procedures and treatments.

The first thing that struck us about Aberdeen Orthopaedics is the sheer number of specialists. With a group of multiple specialist consultants, they can cover a full range of musculoskeletal and orthopaedic conditions.

That means you can expect them to have the expertise and resources to treat everything from hip and knee replacements to spinal, shoulder, hand, and foot and ankle conditions.

Their use of advanced technology also earns a nod from us. Options like their Custom-Fit Conformis implants and Stryker MAKO robotic-assisted surgery improve implant positioning and help speed up recovery. 

But we do feel a bit iffy about the possibility of seeing different specialists during the course of your care since their continuity depends on their availability. So, the specialist you have for initial consultation or surgery might not be the same for follow-ups, which can be confusing. 

The silver lining? They offer remote consultations, and you don’t need a GP referral, so asking questions and booking an appointment won’t be difficult.
