The 5 Best Dermatologists in Glasgow Homepage

The 5 Best Dermatologists in Glasgow

How we picked

Conditions and treatments

We selected dermatologists that see a variety of conditions and offer several treatments for their patients.

Qualifications

We screened each dermatologist’s qualifications such as their memberships, accreditations, awards, certifications, and the like.

Facilities and equipment

To provide the best care, we assessed whether the facilities and equipment they use are up to standards in terms of cleanliness, modernity, and effectivity.

Accessibility

For convenience’s sake, we looked at how easy it was to get in touch with them by looking at the accessibility of their practices, business hours, and communication methods.

Customer service

Given that skin-related concerns are often a sensitive topic, we looked at each dermatologist’s professionalism and behaviour when consulting with their patients.

Pros

  • Has over 30 years of industry experience
  • Qualified to perform a variety of services
  • Open daily and until late

Cons

  • Only practises at private healthcare facilities
  • Staff are often unable to respond to all enquiries due to high demand

After graduating from the University of Glasgow (MBChB) in 1989, Dr. Isabelle Hay began her professional career as a consultant dermatologist at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley and the Inverclyde Hospital in Greenock.

While she was here, she was part of the team that led the progression of the multidisciplinary skin cancer screening clinic in 2009. Apart from that, it’s worth highlighting that she was awarded the 2012 Chairman’s Award for Improving Health.

She is currently practising at the Ross Hall Hospital and Ross Hall Clinic Braehead, open daily from 8 AM to 11 PM. However, they’re both private healthcare facilities, which may not be everyone’s cup of tea.

Though, it’s worth noting that they accept insurance and offer flexible payment plans to help spread the costs of treatment into more manageable and affordable monthly billings.

Her wealth of experience and skills make her qualified to perform various services. These include treatments for acne, eczema, keratosis, psoriasis, and the removal of skin cancer, skin tags, and lesions, among others.

We also found it unique that she offers consultations for hair loss (alopecia) as we’ve only encountered a few dermatologists that provide this service.

With that said, we appreciate that Ross Hall Hospital has a comprehensive video of Dr. Hay discussing the various treatments she offers and the conditions she sees. We think this is a great way for interested patients to watch her explain her expertise.

Aside from that, her healthcare facility provides an enquiry form to learn more about patients’ concerns. Unfortunately, due to high demand, their staff often cannot accommodate all of these.

On a brighter note, many of Dr. Hay’s former patients had compliments about her professionalism and personalised service. In our opinion, her lovely demeanour is also one of the many reasons patients return to her.

Pros

  • Extensive experience in dermatology
  • Has a special interest in skin cancer
  • Practices in 3 different clinics
  • Can perform treatments for skin cancer

Cons

  • Only available at private healthcare facilities
  • Has limited time in clinics

Dr. Robert Herd undertook his general medical training at Edinburgh University. Afterward, he undertook dermatology in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

Here, he trained as a registrar and then a senior registrar. What’s more impressive is that he tackled an extensive study on atopic dermatitis while undertaking these professions.

It’s worth noting that he has a special interest in skin cancer, even participating in a few Ph.D. studies and clinical trials related to the topic. So, it’s safe to say that he’s well-versed in the intricacies and complexities of skin cancer.

Actually, he can also perform a variety of different procedures and treatments for skin cancer. These include performing mole checks, melanoma, actinic keratosis, and squamous cell carcinoma.

On top of that, he has a few of his own noteworthy medical publications, too. Hence, we’re confident in Dr. Herd’s breadth of knowledge and experience, especially given his extensive credentials.

Aside from his own practice, patients will also find him at the Ross Hall Hospital and Ross Hall Clinic Braehead, which he joined in 2008. Hence, we think he’s widely accessible to different hospital patients.

However, he does have to travel back and forth between Edinburgh and Glasgow. So, this could mean that he may not have much time on his hands.

Apart from that, he only practises at private health institutions, which may be a turn-off to some looking for more flexible hospitals that accept nearly all kinds of insurance.

On a brighter note, we think it’s also worth sharing that many patients praised Dr. Herd’s patience and understanding. Those we’ve spoken to claimed to have felt more validated and understood thanks to Dr. Herd’s calming and kind demeanour.

We appreciate the effect of his professionalism and understanding towards his patients, which we think helps boost their morale and self-confidence.

Pros

  • Has a breadth of experience in dermatological practice and teaching
  • Can speak Hindi and English
  • Practises in 4 different clinics
  • Has a particular interest in mole screening, skin cancer, and AI in dermatology, among others
  • Open daily until 11 PM at the Ross Hall clinics

Cons

  • Can only be seen at private healthcare facilities
  • Limited time spent in clinics due to schedule

After graduating from the University of Manchester in 1990, Dr. Girish Gupta kickstarted his dermatology career as a Consultant Dermatologist and Honorary Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Glasgow in 1999.

Since then, he has continued to practise medically and professionally teach. In our opinion, this is probably one of his secrets to keeping his mind so active.

He is interested in mole screening, skin cancer, topical therapy, and AI in dermatology, among others. In addition to that, he’s also published over 100 scientific papers, journals, and textbook chapters.

For his teachings, he is a Consultant Dermatologist in Edinburgh and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer for Edinburgh University. We find his dedication to staying up to date with the latest medical technologies and techniques undeniably impressive.

We think this translates well with how much he puts his learnings into practice. With that said, you can find him practising at The Edinburgh, Nuffield Health, Ross Hall Hospital, and Ross Hall Clinic Braehead, which are all private healthcare institutions.

If you visit him at the Ross Hall clinics, they’re open daily until 11 PM. Though, in our opinion, working at 4 different clinics is quite a double-edged sword.

While it’s great that he can see different patients across several hospitals, this does limit the time he’s actually at each hospital.

Unique to Dr. Gupta is that he’s bilingual, so he can speak English and Hindi, which may benefit some patients. For Hindi-speaking patients, eliminating the language barrier can result in a more mutually beneficial appointment.

According to some of his former patients, Dr. Gupta remains a complete professional but isn’t shy to throw in a few interesting facts about dermatology here and there. In our opinion, this makes him a unique character.
