We compared each entry’s financing and payment methods based on accessibility and cost-efficiency.

Professionalism and demeanour

We eyed lawyers that are known to behave professionally and have a positive demeanour.

Pros

  • Over 30 years of legal experience in family law
  • Firm partner since 1989
  • Accredited specialist in family law and member of the Family Law Association
  • Shows great attention to detail and support for her clients
  • Often personally sought after by clients

Cons

  • Few complaints about unresponsiveness
  • Does not offer legal aid
  • Information on legal fees is not readily available

We were impressed to find that Lynn Harrison has been a litigation partner of Beveridge & Kellas since 1989. Before this, she was the president of the Edinburgh Bar Association and the Society of Solicitors in the Supreme Courts

With over 30 years of legal experience in family law as an accredited specialist and member of the Family Law Association, Harrison has an extraordinary wealth of knowledge.

She’s also quite sought after by many clients. In particular, there have been instances wherein she’s been personally requested to be a client’s solicitor, which attests to her capabilities.

In addition, many we’ve gotten in touch with complimented the support Harrison has shown to her clients, especially those going through a divorce for the first time.

Aside from that, she’s known to show great attention to detail. To boot, she’s often praised for communicating well, especially in complex cases.

We appreciate her effort to make certain that her clients are well aware of all the nitty-gritty details of the case.

Unfortunately, since they’re quite a busy firm, we’ve gotten word from several clients with complaints about their unresponsiveness. Namely, many mentioned not getting callbacks, which, understandably, left many frustrated and let down.

Another drawback we encountered was that they don’t offer legal aid. With that said, they also lack readily available information on their legal fees, which we think poses a barrier to how accessible their services are.

Pros

  • Accredited specialist in family law by the Law Society of Scotland
  • Founding partner of Rooney Family Law
  • Trained in Cooperative Practice
  • Have contacts that offer legal aid
  • Known to be empathetic and value clarity and transparency
  • Information on charging structure is available
  • Online payments via Visa, Mastercard, and AMEX is available

Cons

  • No legal aid
  • Closes a tad earlier on Fridays

An accredited specialist in family law by the Law Society of Scotland, Brian Rooney is a founding partner of Rooney Family Law.

Unique to Rooney is that he’s trained in Collaborative Practice. In our opinion, this makes him a great choice for any client looking for a cooperative alternate dispute method without Court intervention.

Apart from that, Rooney is particularly interested in cases involving complex finances and cohabitation. We think that it’s also worth noting that the firm consists of specialists in High Net Worth Divorce cases.

According to a few of Rooney’s past clients, he’s often empathetic but maintains professionalism.

He’s also known to value clarity and transparency, which we think are admirable characteristics. Some of his former clients vouch for this, praising his patience in making difficult situations easily digestible for his clients.

As for fees, we like that they have a readily accessible section dedicated to explaining their charging structure. We value the straightforwardness as clients won’t have to worry about surprise charges.

We also appreciate that clients can easily make payments online via Visa, Mastercard, and AMEX.

It’s also great that they have contacts that offer legal aid, which helps make their services more affordable. In our opinion, this is a good tradeoff to compensate for the fact that they don’t offer legal aid.

We think it’s inconvenient that they’re closed a bit earlier on Fridays. In our opinion, this could make it a little bothersome for those trying to squeeze in time for a visit after work.

Pros

  • Fellow of the prestigious International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers
  • Qualified in both Scots and English law
  • Specialises in cases that involve high-value complex financial provision and cross-border or international components
  • Has considerable experience in sheriff court and Court of Session litigation
  • Has 20 years of experience as a family law mediator
  • Known for her calm and approachable demeanour

Cons

  • Lacks legal aid
  • Lacks information on construction of fees

What blew us away was Rhona Adams’ extensive credentials. First off, she has considerable experience in sheriff’s court and Court of Session litigation with over 20 years of experience as a family law mediator.

Apart from that, her speciality is in high-value complex financial provision cases and those with cross-border or international components.

Another strong point is that she’s trained in both Scots and English law. Hence, she’s qualified to make legal advice for either jurisdiction.

She is also a fellow of the prestigious International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and an accredited specialist in family law by the Law Society of Scotland.

Adams is known to be quite calm and approachable. In our opinion, this helps make her clients more comfortable around her presence, which we think is beneficial given the stressful nature of going through a divorce.

While everything does seem fine and dandy, we were a tad disappointed that the firm doesn’t have any readily available information regarding the construction of their legal fees.

Aside from that, they don’t provide legal aid either. While online payment is available, we don’t appreciate that clients are left in the dark as far as finances are concerned as legal services aren’t very affordable.

4. Beverley Johnson – Johnson Legal Family Law

Pros

  • Has a particular talent for complex and unusual cases
  • Extensive experience in Court of Session and Sheriff Court
  • Specialises in working on unusual and complex cases
  • Has over 25 years of experience in family law
  • Known for her straightforwardness and clarity

Cons

  • Firm does not offer legal aid
  • No easily available details on legal fees

Beverley Johnson has plenty of experience in the legal field with a career as a solicitor since 1985 and practising exclusively in family law spanning about 25 years.

With that said, she’s highly qualified to take on divorce cases that involve financial complications and children.

But what we found most impressive is her great skill in working with unusual and complex cases. Hence, she’s a great option for cases most divorce lawyers would shy away from.

She also has plenty of experience in Court of Session and Sheriff Court. So, it’s safe to say that she knows how cases in these courts play out and how to best prepare accordingly.

What’s most notable about Johnson’s demeanour is that she cuts to the chase, meaning she doesn’t waste clients’ time on technical jargon. In our opinion, we like that she’s straight to the point in the most laymanised way possible.

However, her services may not be accessible to everyone, given that her firm doesn’t provide legal aid.

Another small area for improvement would be to include details regarding how their legal fees are structured. We think that having this information clearly laid out and easy to interpret gives interested clients a better idea of the cost of their services.

Pros

  • Partner at Gilson & Gray law firm
  • Head of the Family Law Team
  • Has a speciality in high-value financial disputes, prenuptial agreements, and asset protection
  • 20+ years of experience in family law
  • Qualified to provide legal advice in Scotland, England, and Whales
  • Known to have a calm and pragmatic demeanour

Cons

  • Legal aid not available
  • Fee details aren’t readily on hand

With over 20 years of experience in family law, Philippa Cunniff has overwhelming experience dealing with divorce cases that involve child-related issues, division of assets, pension sharing, and maintenance disputes, to name a few.

Her expertise lies in high-value financial disputes, which is why she’s often involved in the preparation and negotiation processes of prenuptial and post-nuptial Agreements.

Did we mention that she’s qualified to provide legal advice in Scotland, England, and Wales? This makes her a great candidate for divorce cases with international complexities as she can practice in either jurisdiction.

Hence, she’s often regarded as a leader in family law. So, aside from being a partner at the Gilson & Gray law firm, she is also the head of their Family Law Team.

Unique to the firm is that they’re open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM. We think this makes them easily accessible, especially to clients busy on weekdays.

Unfortunately, we were disappointed at the lack of legal aid provisions. We also didn’t see a breakdown of their legal fees, which we would have greatly appreciated.

On the flip side, we appreciate that many clients praised her calm and pragmatic nature and approach to resolutions. We think this helps alleviate the stress already inherent in many divorce proceedings.
