Pros
- Strives to provide the best possible Scottish steak experience
- Uses only pedigree Aberdeen Angus beef
- Famous for their Sharing Sunday Roast
- Has a weekday Steak Me Out Deal
- Has their own private dining room
- Known for their Venison Loin and Mushroom Wellington
- Also known for their delicious ribeye
Cons
- 10% service charge will automatically be applied to your bill
- Some issues with the sirloin steak
We think Kyloe is one of the top steak restaurants in Edinburgh. In fact, their mission is to provide the best possible Scottish steak experience, which we can personally vouch for!
They do this by using only pedigree Aberdeen Angus beef supplied by the Hardiesmill Ethical Scotch Beef farm. They are globally recognised as having the highest standards in welfare, which we admire.
Kyloe is actually famous for their £25 per person Sharing Sunday Roast. Customers can choose between 28-day dry-aged rump or ribeye served with sides and dessert, which we think provides great value for your money.
Another money-saving deal they have is their weekday Steak Me Out Deal. For only £65, you can have a gourmet dinner for 2, and we highly recommend this for date nights.
When we went there, we were blown away by their Venison Loin and Mushroom Wellington which was perfect paired with Hispi cabbage, glazed shallots, and broccoli.
We also loved their perfectly-cooked ribeye. We could tell that the beef they used is of a very high quality.
However, we also had their sirloin sharing steak, and we were surprised that it was chewy and hard to cut. It seems that they lack consistency when cooking their meats.
Also, a 10% service charge will automatically be applied to your bill. If you would prefer not to pay it, you would need to let your server know, which we feel is a bit of a hassle.
If you want to celebrate a special occasion, you can rent their pristine private dining room. With its cowhide chairs, contemporary fittings, and dark wood finishings, we think this posh venue would certainly make your special day memorable.

Pros
- Offers ethically-sourced aged British and Irish steaks
- Their chefs are trained at their very own ‘Steak School’
- Awarded ‘The Masters of Steak’ by the Craft Guild of Chefs
- Has a Sunday Set Menu
- Also offers the Chateaubriand Experience
- Delicious Butcher’s Block, Sirloin, and Burgers
Cons
- Smaller portions
- Reports of staff rushing diners
Another good option is Miller & Carter Steakhouse. We love that they offer ethically- sourced aged British and Irish steaks.
They pride themselves in training their chefs at their very own ‘Steak School.’ This ensures that they know how to prepare and cook each cut based on the customers’ personal preferences.
This steakhouse was even awarded ‘The Masters of Steak’ by the Craft Guild of Chefs. This guild inspected everything meticulously – from their field to fork practices, the way they rear their cattle, to how their steaks are butchered, aged, and cooked.
This place is known for their £28.95 Sunday Set Menu, which we recommend for families and friends. This is a 3-course set menu available all-day Sunday.
They also have a unique Chateaubriand Experience package for 2, which would be perfect for romantic dates. For £100, you and your date would be served 16oz Chateaubriand, delicious sides, and a bottle of Argentinian Malbec.
When we went there, we tried their Butcher’s Block, which we also highly recommend. This is a sharing plate that features a 50-day aged Black Angus Ribeye, a 30-day aged Rump, and two cuts of the 50-day aged Black Angus Fillet.
We also thought their tender sirloin with peppercorn sauce and chunky chips were absolutely amazing. On top of that, their Miller’s Dirty Burger was also beautifully cooked.
Sadly, although their steaks were delicious, their portions were a bit small compared to what we received in other restaurants.
We also felt a tad rushed by their servers. Instead of allowing us to enjoy our meal in peace, they kept reminding us of the time, stating that they needed our table.
3. McKirdy’s Steakhouse
Steak Dishes: Surf and Turf Skewers, Steak Crostini, Capital Burger, The Highlander Burger, Black and Blue Burger, McKirdy Royale, Extra Trim Rump Steak, Sirloin, Ribeye, Fillet, T-Bone, Short Bone Tomahawk, Medallions

Pros
- Butchers since 1895
- Garnered several awards
- Delicious rump and T-bone steaks
- Known for their delicious burgers
- Has vegetarian options and a kid’s menu
- Has an Early Diner’s menu
Cons
- Pricier steak cuts
- Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays
McKirdy’s Steakhouse is also another premier steak house in Edinburgh. This is because the McKirdys have been butchers since 1895, which we think is quite impressive.
Speaking of being impressive, they also managed to snag various industry awards. These include 2022’s Travelers’ Choice by Tripadvisor, 1998’s Best Scottish Haggis and Best in South East Scotland Pork Sausages by Scottish Haggis Championship.
We ordered their rump and T-bone steaks, and we did not regret it. The chargrilled taste of the rump was fabulous, and the T-bone steaks were fantastic.
Since they are also known for their delicious burgers, we also tried their Mckirdy “Royale.” We highly recommend this deliciously beefy gem!
For those dining with vegetarians or kids, you’d be happy to know that they have various vegetarian options and an affordable kid’s menu.
For those looking to save some money, they even have an Early Diner’s Menu from Wednesdays to Sundays. You can choose between a two-course meal for £16.95 or a three-course meal for £19.95.
One downside is that they are comparatively pricier than the other restaurants we went to. For instance, their 8 oz fillet steak is priced at £34.95, while this cut is slightly cheaper in other restaurants.
Also, those who are craving steak on Mondays and Tuesdays need to go elsewhere since they are closed on those days.

Pros
- Traditional South American-inspired steaks
- Open all week
- Delicious Bife de Lomo (fillet)
- Tender Bife Ancho (ribeye)
- Offers a great sharing platter: Rancho Parrillada Mixta
- Competitively priced
- Has a children’s menu
Cons
- Flavour and temperature issues
- Tiny, smoky place
If you have a hankering for traditional South American-inspired steaks, Rancho Steakhouse would be the option for you. They base their menu around prime South American beef, following traditional South-American restaurants.
Unlike other restaurants, they are open all week, which we appreciate.
To beat the crowds, we went there early. We had their Bife de Lomo or fillet steak, and it was so delightful – it was sublimely juicy and tasty, with no fat or gristle at all.
We also tried their Bife Ancho or ribeye steak. It was so tender and perfectly-cooked, so we made a mental note to order this again in the future.
Their sharing platter or Rancho Parrillada Mixta was also impressive and great for groups. It includes a selection of steak, ribs, lamb chops, and grilled chicken, served with peppercorn sauce.
Sadly, we found their Bife de Chorizo or sirloin steak to be quite tough and rubbery. Also, we asked for a medium-rare Churrasco de Cuadril or rump steak, but we received a well-done steak.
We hope they work on their cooking temperature so that they can produce beautiful steaks consistently.
In terms of price, we think their steaks are priced quite competitively. For instance, their 12oz sirloin costs £18.99, but this cut is priced higher in other restaurants.
We also did not enjoy the actual venue. We felt it was a bit tiny and cramped, and coupled with its smoky atmosphere, it actually became a bit unbearable after a couple of hours.
5. Hawksmoor
Steak Dishes: Potted Beef and Bacon, Fillet Carpaccio, Bone Marrow with Onions, Hawksmoor Hamburger, Cast-Iron Fillet Steak, Chateaubriand, Bone-In Prime Rib, Porterhouse, T-bone, Fillet, Ribeye, Sirloin, Rump, Grilled Bone Marrow

Pros
- Features Scottish beef from grass-fed native breed cattle
- Beautiful, upscale decor
- Known for their filet mignon and rump
- Has daily set menus
- Famous for their Amazing Sunday Roast
- Has two private dining rooms
- Wheelchair-accessible
Cons
- Pricey
- Long wait times
If you feel like going somewhere a bit fancy for your steak, then Hawksmoor is the place to go. This posh restaurant features Scottish beef from grass-fed native breed cattle.
Their place is the most elegant steak restaurant we went to. It was class all the way with its very high ceilings, dark wood, and leather chairs – and we think this would be perfect if you want to impress your date or clients.
We tried their filet mignon, and it was superb. It was extremely tender and perfectly cooked.
We also had their rump steak, and it was such a masterpiece. It was flawless and came with all the trimmings, which we really enjoyed.
For those looking to save money, they have set menus available every day until 6 PM. A two-course meal would set you back £24 and £27 for a three-course meal.
They are also quite famous for their Amazing Sunday Roast. For £23, you can enjoy their slow roast rump served with roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, and lashings of bone marrow.
If you want to celebrate a special event, then you can choose to rent one of their two private dining rooms. Their Tellers’ Room can fit up to 46 diners and their McLellan Room can host up to 13 guests.
They are also wheelchair-accessible, which we think is great. Those with wheelchairs can enter from The Edinburgh Grand Hotel.
Of course, the more upscale the restaurant, the higher the price. However, we feel like the ambiance and the culinary skill that came along with their steaks were worth it.
Also, their waiting times were comparatively longer than in other restaurants – but we think the dishes were worth it!
