  • Open 6 days a week
  • Reasonably priced services
  • Offers 1-hour express services for simple jobs
  • Quick turnover period
  • Helpful and friendly staff
  • Highly skilled in alterations and repairs

Cons

  • Pricing information isn’t readily viewable

Westend Tailors is an undeniable local favourite because of their amazing service. In fact, they’re capable of handling the most delicate to most difficult fabrics to work with.

We also love how they’re committed to ensuring that customers’ items are done on the agreed turnover date. In our opinion, this leaves many at ease given that most clothing is to be worn on important events.

Though, if you’re in quite a hurry, they also offer 1-hour express services for simple jobs such as light alterations and repairs.

Actually, we’ve heard several stories from their past customers that the staff here are kind enough to help out tourists with clothing issues on the spot.

Based on our experience, the friendliness and helpfulness of their staff is unmatched. To boot, they charge reasonable prices for their high-quality and efficient services.

Since each service rendered to a customer is unique, they don’t have their fees readily viewable on their website. Even so, we would have liked to see a pricing matrix to give interested customers a better idea of the cost of their services.

Having said that, if you’re looking to have something done, you’ll have to pop by their store at Queensferry St.

As for their availability, they’re open Mondays through Saturdays. So, you can pop by at your earliest convenience.

Pros

  • Has a wealth of industry experience having been passed down 4 generations
  • Highly skilled in creating a variety of clothing, accessories, and footwear
  • Pricing matrix available
  • Carry several kinds of the finest fabrics
  • Accommodating and patient staff

Cons

  • Closed on Sundays and Mondays
  • Small team which sometimes results in long turnover times

If industry experience is a top priority for you, then it’s worth highlighting that Stewart Christie & Co. has been in the game since the 1720s.

Having been passed down four generations, they’re well-known in the industry for supplying to the Moderators of the Church of Scotland and the Royal Company of Archers, among many others.

We were also impressed at the variety of services they offer, from creating bespoke attire to carrying ready-made leather goods.

Zeroing in on their tailoring services, we love that they’re equipped and experienced in creating ceremonial, highland, corporate, and specialised wear, to name a few.

Did we mention that they import only the finest kinds of fabrics? So, it’s no surprise that the quality of their items is top-notch.

Their customer service is impeccable, too. From our experience, we felt like royalty given how accommodating and patient their staff were with our requests and queries.

Based on our observations, the family is incredibly meticulous with their output, which is why they’re only a two-person team.

In our opinion, this could be a double-edged sword, especially when orders pile up. As a result, some customers have complained about long turnover times.

On the brighter side, we appreciate their transparency as they often communicate these changes directly with the client concerned.

It’s also great that they have a pricing matrix on their website. So, those interested can already get a general idea of how much their services will cost.

Unfortunately, they’re only open from Tuesday to Saturday, which may pose accessibility issues.

  • Part of the Edinburgh Reuse Map
  • Efficient staff with relatively quick turnover periods
  • Caters some services not listed

Cons

Apart from regular clothing, they’re also highly skilled in working with kilts, waistcoats, and bridesmaids’ dresses, to name a few.

We were also impressed by how efficiently they work, being able to finish fixing trouser zippers within an hour on the spot. In our opinion, this is representative of the skills their staff possess.

They’re also incredibly affordable to boot. You can also easily view their pricing information on their website.

We appreciate that they try to accommodate all requests. So if the service you’re looking for isn’t listed, you can drop by for a personalised quote.

So, they’ve become a household favourite for many around the area for the stellar service and great value for money.

It’s also admirable that they’re part of the Edinburgh Reuse Map, working towards becoming a zero-waste shop. In our opinion, this is a commendable move, especially with the growing climate crisis.

It’s important to note that they’re only operational on Mondays by appointment and from Tuesdays to Saturdays, which may limit their availability. Nevertheless, they’re known to have relatively quick turnover periods.

  • Specialise in gentleman’s wear and tailoring
  • Regularly keep in contact with clients regarding status of their items
  • Accepts card and cash

Cons

  • Sundays are by appointment only

If you love getting your clothes tailored the old fashioned way, then we think you’ll appreciate the way things are run at Mr James Tailors & Outfitters.

James Dougan has specialised in gentlemen’s clothing and tailoring since 1960. He put up his shop in 1977 and was joined by his son, Derek, just a year later.

So, the father and son duo have a little over 60 years of combined industry experience. In our perspective, they definitely know what they’re doing when it comes to making the perfect suit given how much attention to detail they give each piece.

In fact, many of their past clients consider their bespoke suits a long-term investment. If you ask us, they aren’t wrong given the amazing quality of each garment.

We also love how easily accessible they are since they’re open from Mondays to Saturdays. They’re also available on Sundays as long as you make an appointment.

Impressively, they offer out-of-hours arrangements, too. They’re also quite easy to get in touch with, which we highly appreciate as you won’t be left in the dark regarding any progress made with your items.

Another added convenience is that they accept cash and card. So, clients can pay whichever way is most flexible for them.

However, they don’t have any readily available information on how their fees are structured. So, you’ll have to pop by to discuss the kind of services you’ll require for a personalised quote.

We also love that they’re highly skilled in working with all kinds of fabrics and leathers. Hence, the possibilities are endless when it comes to designing your very own bespoke piece.

In fact, they provide both casual and formal tailoring services. So, you can look your best regardless of the occasion.

With posh their store is, you can expect their fees to be a tad pricier than their competitors. However, some of their past clients would argue that it’s worth it.

Their fee structure is readily viewable on their website, so interested clients already have an idea of what to expect.
