Nestled along the picturesque Aberdeenshire coastline, Cruden Bay is a charming Scottish village known for its serene beaches, mysterious castle ruins, world-class golfing, and rich history. 

And let’s not forget its ties to one of the world’s most famous gothic novels—Dracula.

As a fan, visiting Slains Castle was at the top of my agenda. Perched dramatically on the cliffs, let me tell you, wow, it was spectacular.

Drawing visitors each year with its eerie beauty and historical intrigue, Cruden Bay is the perfect escape for adventurers, history lovers, or anyone in search of a peaceful retreat.

Where is Cruden Bay?

Located on the picturesque northeastern coast of Scotland, Cruden Bay is renowned for its stunning beaches, breathtaking landscapes, and the historic ruins of Slains Castle, which is said to have inspired Dracula. 

Just 23 miles north of Aberdeen, this charming village offers a peaceful escape with miles of scenic views and the world-class Cruden Bay Golf Club, a favorite among golf enthusiasts. 

How to Get to Cruden Bay

By Car: The easiest way to head to Cruden Bay is via car. If you’re coming from Aberdeen, Cruden Bay is a 40-minute drive up north via the A90 then exit A975.

By Bus: Take the 63 or X60 bus routes from Aberdeen Union Square Bus Station operated by Stagecoach, which usually takes about 1 hour.

Overlooking Cruden Bay, Slains Castle was built in 1597 by the Earl of Erroll. Its current ruins, shaped by coastal conditions and the owners’ misfortunes, reflect a long history of reconstructions.

The Earls of Erroll thrived after William Hay, the 18th Earl, married the daughter of King William IV, but the family later faced financial troubles. In 1919, Sir John Ellerman bought the castle and removed the roof in 1925 to avoid taxes. 

Today, it is privately owned by a descendant of the original Earls and is not open to the public. However, you may view it from a distance.

Slains Castle is famous for hosting celebrities in the 19th century, including Bram Stoker, who is believed to have drawn inspiration from it for Dracula (1897). 

Additionally, fans of The Crown (2016-2023) will recognize the castle, as it stood in for Castle Mey during the Queen Mother’s visit to Scotland in Season 1.
