Oban’s 13 Best Hotels for Every Traveller and Budget

When visiting Oban, you can’t just stay for the day. To truly experience what this seaside escape has to offer, you’ve got to stay a couple of nights. The good news? Oban’s got loads of hotels that will make you feel right at home.

Whether you want harbour views or to be close to the bustling city, there’s a hotel for every kind of traveller and budget. I once spent a night in a hotel where I had the best sleep of my life; the bed was so comfy, I had to ask the concierge where they bought it!

After many stays (and a couple of hotel breakfasts), here’s my tried-and-true list of Oban hotels for the best stay, from check-in to check-out.

Dungallan Country House is set in timeless Scottish elegance above Oban Bay, offering dreamy views of Kerrera, Lismore, Mull, and the Sound. Its tranquil, secluded location provides a peaceful retreat, yet it is only a short 10-minute walk from Oban town centre.

Originally built as a summer residence by the Duke of Argyll in 1870, the house retains a sense of historic grandeur. The current owners have carefully restored it, blending Victorian charm with modern comforts to meet contemporary guest expectations.

Every corner of Dungallan reflects a thoughtful refurbishment, from the bathroom tiles and mirrors to Smart TVs, silent mini fridges, and embroidered bathrobes. This balance of classic and modern ensures both comfort and authenticity during your stay.

The gardens and wraparound patio maintain privacy while offering spectacular views. Guests can relax on comfortable seating with parasols and enjoy sunsets alongside the soothing fountain inspired by Eton College.

Dungallan is a haven for whisky lovers, boasting one of the most extensive selections in Oban. Guests can explore rare single malts and renowned blends through curated whisky flights in the refined whisky bar or fireside lounge.

The hotel caters to every type of traveller, whether seeking relaxation, exploration, or indulgence in Scotland’s finest whisky. Its combination of scenic surroundings, historical architecture, and modern amenities makes it a standout choice for visitors to Oban.

With its attention to detail, warm hospitality, and unique whisky experiences, Dungallan Country House creates a memorable stay. It is an ideal destination for those who appreciate luxury, comfort, and a touch of Scottish heritage.

Pro Tip: Book a whisky flight and enjoy it on the wraparound patio at sunset. The combination of rare Scottish whiskies, breathtaking bay views, and the gentle fountain creates one of the most memorable experiences in Oban.

A 19th-century property overlooking Loch Etive, the Falls of Lora Hotel is one of my favourite 3-star stays. Complete with an à la carte restaurant, bar, free parking, and less than 20 minutes to the beach? Book it!

It’s also in the affordable to upper-mid-range tier, making it a good value choice for comfortable stays. Plus, the owners are incredibly hands-on, which adds to the rustic charm of the place.

Pro Tip: If you love waking up to a view or prefer a ground-floor room for easier access, don’t be shy to ask when you book. The team here is wonderfully accommodating.

The Ranald Hotel

Located at the heart of Oban, The Ranald Hotel is the place to be for a comfortable stay that’s easily within walking distance of Oban’s train station, ferry terminal, and shops, without breaking the bank.

My favourite part? Breakfast. While there are occasional limitations given that this is a 4-star hotel, I can’t fault them for making-to-order options and buffet choices, all prepared daily. A real hack is requesting their “breakfast grab bag” the night before for when you’ve got an early start.

Pro Tip: It’s worth noting that there’s no elevator, so let them know in advance if you’d prefer a lower-level room.

Oban Bay Hotel

Want to know what I love most about the Knipoch House Hotel? It’s straight out of a fairytale, with panoramic views of Loch Feochan. More of a house than a hotel, this enchanting retreat was originally a 15th-century hunting lodge until it was refurbished in 2024.

It’s worth noting that it’s a 6-mile drive from Oban, making it a great escape from the city. You can relax at the 1635 restaurant, serving a seven-course tasting menu, or indulge in any of their other classical, welcoming rooms or fully-stocked bar by the fire.

Pro Tip: Don’t skip their outdoor hot tub! It’s the perfect spot to relax after a long day of exploring.
