Established in 1910 in the parkland of the Pollok Country Park, the Haggs Castle Golf Club is one of Scotland’s premier golf courses.
In fact, it hosted four European Tour events in the 1980s. Several famous golfers such as David Feherty, Ken Brown, and Bernhard Langer have also taken a swing at their course.
Today, the course is most notable for annually hosting the Cameron Corbett Vase. Given their popularity, we think their course is a great place to play at competition-worthy holes.
From the back trees, it boasts over 6,000 yards which makes it an enjoyable course for players of all skill levels in our opinion.
We were impressed to find a comprehensive explanation of what to expect at each hole. This way, players can strategise their position and tactics early on.
They even have a practice range and game area, to boot. We think this is perfect for lessons and beginners.
Speaking of, it’s worth noting that they offer golfing lessons. Led by renowned golfer Campbell Elliott, they charge an affordable £25 for a half hour session and £30 for a video lesson.
Since lessons are by the half hour, students don’t have to worry about long-term commitment. This way, they can simply enjoy their lessons to see whether golfing is for them.
As for their other amenities, they have a spacious clubhouse for events, a shop for golfing equipment, and a restaurant.
As for availability, it’s great that they’re open daily and as late as 9 PM on certain days. However, they have irregular closing times so it’s important to double-check.
All said, it’s no surprise that they currently have a waiting list for some of their membership categories.
From our perspective, their opening schedules are quite tight, too. They only run from April 1st to March 31st yearly.
Pros
- Large course with 18 holes
- Offers affordable golfing lessons
- Annually hosts the Cameron Corbett Vase
- Has a practice range and game area
- Open daily
Cons
- Irregular closing times
- Has a waiting list for their membership categories

What sets the Williamwood Golf Club apart from the other courses on this list is that it was designed by James Braid.
He’s a well-respected golf course architect who developed the impressive 200-yard and 18-hole parkland course.
The club also has a lot of history in its roots having been established in 1906. Despite its age, we appreciate how well it has been maintained over the years.
We also appreciate that they added a quaint wildlife area, which we think is a nice touch. Golfers can enjoy a challenging game whilst admiring the beautiful scenery.
Avid golfers will love that they’re open daily and as early as 7 AM on the weekends. However, they do close a tad early, which we think is quite disappointing for those looking to spend more time there.
Did we mention that they also offer golfing lessons for beginners, juniors, and ladies? This is led by Matthew Burt who accomplished his training under PGA Professional Fraser Hall.
It’s worth noting that they provide several amenities that players can enjoy as well. These include trolleys, changing rooms, lockers, a pro shop and a putting area, among others.
They also have a clubhouse that serves as a function room and restaurant. We’ve heard a tonne of great things about their varied dishes, which also makes the club a great place for family events.
Unfortunately, they only have a limited number of membership vacancies available. Nevertheless, they entertain enquiries via email.
Pros
- Spacious 200-yard, 18-hole course
- Offers several amenities
- Open daily
- Offers golfing lessons
Cons
- Limited membership vacancies
- Closes early

Did you know that the Cathkin Braes Golf Club’s course is actually the oldest in all of Glasgow? Initially founded in 1888, the 6,200-yard and par 71 course was redesigned by the renowned golf course architect James Braid.
Our favourite thing about the course is that it has 18 unique holes that will put your skills to the test. Hence, it doesn’t come as a surprise to us that many golfers rave about their fun experiences here.
Speaking of, we like that players can easily view and book tee times as well as download the club’s ready-made scorecard.
It’s great that they have practice facilities. These include a 20-acre practice area and bunkers, which we think are great tools for helping beginners improve.
Apart from that, they have other club amenities such as dining facilities, wash rooms, modern lounges, and bars, to name a few.
Despite being open daily, they close at 6 PM which we think is quite the bummer. If you ask us, members will definitely enjoy a later closing time.
We also appreciate that their membership information is also readily available for interested individuals to look through.
Speaking of their memberships, we think it’s worth highlighting that the club is a member club of The Association of James Braid Courses.
In our opinion, it’s a strong statement to competitors that members get to enjoy discounted rates when playing at several national and international courses.
We were a tad disappointed that they currently have a waiting list, though. Nevertheless, you can get in touch with them to put your name and contact information on their list.
Pros
- Enormous 6,200-yard course
- Open daily
- Has a 20-acre practice area
- Membership details are readily available
- Accessible tee time booking facilities
- Members get discounted rates when playing at several national and international courses
Cons
- Closes early
- Currently has a waiting list for their membership openings

Unique about the Great Western Golf is that their 18-hole course is actually dinosaur-themed complete with figures and sound effects. Hence, we think this makes them a fun place to introduce kids to golfing.
We also love how spacious it is here as they have 65 heated trackman bays. This way, you won’t have to worry about getting too close to the other players.
Apart from that, you can enjoy a game of golf in even the most unforgiving Scottish cold.
It’s also worth mentioning that they’re quite high-tech, too. They have equipment installed to track each shot and gauge your progress, which we think is incredibly beneficial for helping players improve their skills.
If you’re entirely new to golf, they also offer a variety of lessons, from one-to-one sessions to ladies’ classes. We like the variation as people can choose whichever class best suits their skill sets and availability.
However, we found their rates a tad pricey in comparison to other courses. We also think it’s quite the inconvenience that they don’t accept cash payments.
We’ve also heard a tonne of poor reviews from regulars here that the course doesn’t seem to be maintained enough. There have been a couple of complaints about clogged holes.
Pros
- Dinosaur themed 18-hole course
- Open daily
- Has 65 heated trackman bays
- Membership details are readily available
- Various golfing lessons are available
Cons
- Cash payments aren’t accepted
- Quite pricey
- Needs to be better-maintained

The Balmore Golf Club was designed by the esteemed Harry Vardon, the 6-time winner of The Open Championship. Based on the feedback we’ve collected, many enjoy the uniqueness of each hole.
We’ve heard from a tonne of golfers that this course is relatively simple. Hence, this may be palatable for golfers that prefer a simple and straightforward game.
What we love best about this course is that it’s an open and secluded 18-hole course. So despite being only 7 miles from the city center, we like that it feels more private and quiet.
Unique to the club is that they’re open 24 hours daily, which we think makes them perfect for late night or early morning golfing sessions.
Having mentioned that, we think it’s a great touch that they offer various golfing lessons depending on your calibre. To boot, they even have a 10-acre practice facility.
As for their membership details, we appreciate that the information and forms are readily available online. We also like that they have a tonne of membership options to accommodate different budgets and lifestyles.
Unfortunately, their course can get a little packed, especially when the weather’s great. As a result, this leaves quite a few players with no space to play or equipment to use.
Pros
- Open 24 hours daily
- Members can enjoy perks from PlayMoreGolf
- Accessible tee time booking facilities
- Various golfing lessons are available
- Have a 10-acre practice facility
Cons
- Course is relatively simple and straightforward
- Can get quite packed
