Pros

  • Rigorous hiring process for tutors
  • Has PVG certificates
  • Free 15-minute meeting
  • 24/7 help service
  • Tutors students with learning difficulties
  • Offers online and in-person tutorials

Cons

  • Fairly new company
  • Might be hard to book during peak academic seasons

Caledonia Tutors is an absolute cracker of a tutoring service that provides educational support to students of every stripe.

We were impressed when we found out that every tutor goes through a 2-stage application and interview process and has a PVG certificate and proof of qualifications. That means only the crème de la crème make the cut.

We also appreciate their free 15-minute meeting, where the student, parent, and tutor can have a chinwag. This crucial step lets both sides suss out if they’re the right fit.

These folks also offer a proper 24/7 help service, so students can contact their tutor directly. Whether it’s a tight deadline or a looming exam, their tutors are there to keep you on track.

We love that they support students with learning difficulties like ADHD, dyscalculia, and dyslexia, as well as those gunning for A1s to make their Oxbridge dreams come true. Meaning, they offer support at every step of the academic ladder.

They have both online and in-person tutorials, so you can pick what suits you best. Whether you’re snug as a bug in your own home or fancy meeting up face-to-face, they’ve got you covered.

That said, it’s worth mentioning that they just recently burst onto the scene in 2018. For parents who want someone more experienced (or with a proven track record) for their kids, this might not be the service for you.

Also, getting a booking during peak academic seasons might be a bit of a skoosh. With the demand for tutoring support at its peak, it could take a bit of a nudge to secure a session with Caledonia Tutors.

Pros

  • Over 45 years of experience
  • Has 260 centres across the UK, Republic of Ireland, and Isle of Man
  • Offers a free assessment
  • Ofsted-registered
  • Provides progress reports

Cons

  • Comparatively pricier
  • No morning sessions on weekdays

Kip McGrath Education Centre is another tutoring powerhouse with a stellar reputation, boasting over 45 years of experience in the industry.

Unlike other centres with limited coverage, they have 260 centres across the UK, Republic of Ireland, and Isle of Man. This expansive network means you’re sure to find a centre nearby, making their services easily accessible to eager learners.

We appreciate them because they know the value of a wee taster. They offer a free assessment to students, helping them understand their current academic standing and identify areas that need a bit of a polish.

They are also Ofsted-registered. This means they meet rigorous standards of quality and care in the realm of British education.

We like how they excel at keeping tabs on progress. They provide regular progress reports in Maths, so you can track your kid’s academic journey.

Here’s the thing, their services come with a wee bit of a higher price tag. With fees ranging from £33 to £40 per hour, they might pinch the pocket a tad more than other options.

Also, early birds might be disappointed since they operate with a schedule that’s later than others. This means students might have to shuffle their schedules a bit to fit in a session.

Pros

  • Winners of the 2020 Corporate Live Wire’s Prestige Awards
  • Supports Scotland’s Curriculum for Excellence
  • Provides tailored lessons
  • Comparatively more affordable
  • Has SATS preparation programs

Cons

  • No online tutoring
  • More limited range of subjects

MagiKats Tuition Centres offer a solid blend of educational support and curriculum alignment.

For instance, they’ve been crowned the winners of the 2020 Corporate Live Wire’s Prestige Awards. This speaks volumes about the quality and excellence they bring to the table.

We think they also know their onions when it comes to supporting Scotland’s Curriculum for Excellence. They offer weekly education workshops specifically designed to align with this curriculum.

We commend their understanding that each child is unique and has their own strengths and areas for improvement. That’s why they tailor their lessons, enabling students to maximise their potential and make progress at their own pace.

For those on a budget, they bring quality tutoring within reach. They offer their services at a comparatively more affordable rate (£70 monthly tuition), making it accessible to a wider range of families.

They also go the extra mile by offering SATS preparation programs. With their expertise and focused SATS preparation, they provide students with the tools they need to tackle these assessments with confidence.

Sadly, they have yet to venture into the world of online tutoring. This might limit their accessibility for those who prefer remote learning or live in more remote areas.

Also, they primarily focus on key subjects and core areas of study. This means they might have a more limited range of subjects compared to some other tutoring services.

Pros

  • Largest supplementary education provider in the UK
  • Has a global presence
  • Free assessment
  • In-centre or online tutoring
  • Has Kumon Connect

Cons

  • Closed on Sundays
  • Has a registration fee
  • Tutoring spots fill up fast

Kumon is another solid tutoring service that has made its mark in bonny Edinburgh.

First off, Kumon takes the crown as the largest supplementary education provider in the UK. Meaning, they offer extensive resources and expertise to support students in their educational journey.

However, Kumon isn’t just a local affair. We were quite impressed that they’ve established their presence in a whopping 60 countries and regions.

We love how they understand the importance of a wee peek into a student’s current academic standing. That’s why they offer a free assessment to help gauge a student’s strengths and areas for improvement.

Students can also choose between in-centre or online tutoring, offering flexibility to fit individual preferences and logistical constraints.

We also like their unique digital worksheet, Kumon Connect, which adds a touch of modernity to the tutoring experience. This platform facilitates communication and progress tracking between tutors, students, and parents.

Do note that Kumon takes a breather on Sundays. Also, they have a registration fee, unlike other centres.

Lastly, we learned that tutoring spots tend to fill up fast, so you need to book well in advance if you want to ensure a spot for your kid.

Pros

  • Established for 15 years
  • Has 300 centres nationwide
  • Owners bring seven years of experience from working in Kumon
  • Free assessment
  • Two-week free trial
  • Aligned with the National Curriculum

Cons

  • Closed on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays
  • Narrower range of learning options

First Class Learning has been rooted in Edinburgh’s educational landscape for 15 fruitful years, showing their commitment to quality education.

With over 300 centres nationwide, First Class Learning has created a strong network of educational support. This expansive presence ensures that students can access their services conveniently, no matter where they are in Scotland.

After a little digging, we learned that the owners of the Edinburgh franchise bring seven years of experience from working in Kumon. They’ve gathered wisdom from one of the industry’s giants, infusing their own teaching methods with their Kumon roots.

They also offer a free assessment, guiding tutors to tailor their support for a personalised learning experience.

To ensure a good fit, they provide a generous two-week free trial, which we’re quite happy about. This trial period is like a sampler plate of educational support, giving you a taste of what First Class Learning has to offer.

We also think their individualised programs will boost students’ confidence, fill knowledge gaps, and support their learning journey.

They proudly offer all-British programs that align with the National Curriculum in maths and English. We believe this helps students receive a cohesive educational experience by seamlessly blending their learning with the nation’s academic standards.

On the downside, they’re closed on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. This might pose some scheduling challenges for those specifically seeking support on these days.

They also have a narrower range of learning options, but their focus on maths and English programs aligned with the National Curriculum brings expertise to these core subjects.

We like that they offer to teach a wide range of school subjects and for different year levels. Whatever year level your child may be in, we think they’d have an expert tutor who can help!

Cons

LS Tuition is a place that supports children through personalised learning plans and individually tailored teaching, which we really like and one of the reasons why we recommend them.

They’re a team of fully qualified Primary School teachers that teach children aged 4-13, including Early Years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.

What we like about them is how they train students to be problem solvers and analytical thinkers. They don’t just teach children individual concepts, but enable them to use these interchangeably and in different situations and purposes.

Lessons take place in their learning space which is the perfect location to enhance the learning experience of their valued students.

We’re impressed by the fact that they’ve helped many children gain their confidence in school and foster a love of learning in each of them.

They’re there to truly help and teach children, ensuring that they get better each time.

All in all, we highly recommend!
