I had one of those painfully awkward moments the other day. My coworkers were chatting about taking dance classes instead of hitting the club, and someone asked if I wanted to try salsa. Without missing a beat, I blurted out, “I like mine a bit spicy and sour.” Crickets.

But honestly, can you blame me? I’d just come back from a food review trip with my team that had us swimming in salsas, dips, sauces, and all kinds of dishes that left a serious impression.

And because we’re not about gatekeeping good food, here are our top picks of the best Mexican restaurants in Dundee.

What we love about Más is how their kitchen uses fresh ingredients and local suppliers. That’s why we don’t get that “frozen or reheated” taste in our mouths after trying out their food.

The diners we talked to also shared some of their favourites from the menu, including crispy mushroom tacos, Baja fish tacos, guacamole nachos, and churros for dessert—they even got a nod of approval from other Mexican guests, too.

One of the things we quickly noticed as well is that they have a separate vegan food menu, and the majority of it can be adjusted to be gluten-free, which we think is a thoughtful touch.

As for the drinks? They’ve got many Mexican classics and a strong cocktail menu. Their frozen margaritas, tequila, and mezcal flights add to the authenticity of the dining experience.

Just note that because of its popularity and modest size, it tends to fill up quickly, so waiting for tables can take longer. Still, their reputation doesn’t come as a surprise given the quality of their dishes.

Pros

  • Uses fresh ingredients and local suppliers
  • Wide variety of vegan and gluten-free options
  • Has a strong cocktail and drink menu
  • Serves generous portions
  • Convenient city-centre location

Cons

  • Can have long wait times

As you can tell from its name, Sol y Sombra Tapas Bar serves a wide range of tapas. You’ll find a mix of hot and cold tapas, like seasonal fish, meats, cured meats, olives, cheese plates, and more.

That said, their set menus make a lot of sense since you get to try a variety of hot and cold tapas for a fixed price. We found that many diners opt for this since it sort of feels like a blind box on what they’re going to serve.

The catch? These set menus might feel steep for some, especially since you’ll already see around £22.50 to £31 per person, even without drinks.

But hey, many diners go for this option and leave the restaurant highly satisfied.

The staff are also incredibly attentive to dietary requirements, and they can accommodate you whether you’re vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, or need gluten-free options.

Lastly, we also love their diverse drinks menu, with selections of wines, cocktails, sangria, beers, and more.

Pros

  • Great tapas selection
  • Good set menus
  • Impressive dietary support
  • Diverse drinks menu

Cons

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Slightly pricier than others

Excellent food

“Excellent food. Best tapas restaurant I have been too. Had set menu dinner which is half price on a Tuesday.”

We’d like to dive straight into Rancho Pancho’s Lunch Club offers. On Saturdays, they run a Lunch Club from about 12 PM to 2:30 PM, offering 2 courses for £14.99 or 3 courses for £17.99, which is a solid option if you want to try a variety of dishes without breaking the bank.

But you can also order à la carte or individually. Some of our favourites include their marinated chicken wings served with Cholula sauce and sour cream, Michoacan beef, and their veggie enchiladas with Ranchero sauce.

Here’s the thing, though: we noticed that it’s sometimes a hit or miss if you have any notes or requests on how you want your food, whether it be with the spice levels or other things.

On the bright side, their drinks and cocktail selection are impressive. You can try all sorts of premium spirits, fresh fruit, crafted cocktails, and a good range of Mexican beers.

Pros

  • Great Lunch Club offers
  • Decent drinks and cocktail selection
  • Has an online reservation system

Cons

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Can improve on spice and dish customization

Great food, great cocktails, great service

“Great food, great cocktails & great service! The staff were clearly ran off their feet yet provided nothing but amazing service!”

Mexican Grill covers all the staples you’d expect, like fajitas, burritos, enchiladas, tacos, and quesadillas, alongside smaller sharing plates and sides.

And since the portion sizes are quite big and generous, it’s easier for groups to share around the table and try different menu items while they’re at it. For solo diners, a burrito with rice and beans can easily make you full, which feels like good value.

It’s also worth mentioning that they have a dedicated festive menu (something for special occasions or seasonal holidays). Simply put, you get to order unique items not normally found on the regular menu.

Price-wise, we do think they lean on the higher side, especially if you add up your meals from starters to mains to drinks. Also, some diners experience wait times, particularly in waiting for their food to come.

Nonetheless, we can’t deny that Mexican Grill is a go-to for many locals, especially since it’s in the city centre and makes for a convenient pick for a pre-theatre meal or a casual dinner.

Pros

  • Wide range of Mexican classics
  • Serves generous portion sizes
  • Convenient location
  • Has a dedicated Festive Menu

Cons

  • Can have long wait times
  • Slightly pricier menu items

We like that Wee Mexico doesn’t mean wee variety, too. On that note, we love how you can customise meals and mix and match sauces to fit your taste.

For instance, you can pick from different main types—like burritos, tacos, wraps, quesadillas, nachos—and tailor fillings, sauces, and more. This is a game-changer when you have preferences, be it spice level, dietary needs, or just plain cravings.

Some of the crowd-pleasers on their menu include chilli beef fries, burritos, queso, and fresh salad. They also have vegan and vegetarian choices, such as mock meats (“vegan chicken,” “vegan beef”), vegan cheese, and sour cream, which act as great substitutes.

The drawback? We noted some inconsistencies with the quality of food they serve. And sometimes, under busy periods, the service can lag a little, so while most meals get a pass, you may occasionally get a less “perfect” one.

Regardless, Wee Mexico can definitely satisfy your Mexican food fix, especially if you’re looking for something affordable and plentiful.

Pros

  • Has a decent variety
  • Ability to customise meals
  • Serves generous portion sizes
  • Competitive rates

Cons

  • Can have long wait times
  • Can improve consistency in quality
