Pros

  • Open 24 hours
  • Budget-friendly memberships
  • Offers online deals
  • On-site bike parking and free WiFi
  • Offers a variety of fitness classes

Cons

  • Limited range of cable and lifting equipment
  • Changing rooms not available from 1 AM to 3 AM
  • Does not permit the charging or storing of e-scooters or e-bikes

The Gym Group was founded by John Treharne, a former England squash player, in 2008. It’s open 24 hours, allowing you to work out whenever it suits your schedule.

They offer budget-friendly memberships, starting at just £17.99/month for off-peak hours. Plus, they offer online deals, with 50% off the first month – we think it’s a great way to kickstart your fitness journey without breaking the bank.

For those who prefer eco-friendly commuting, bike parking is available on-site, making it convenient for cyclists.

We also appreciate their wide variety of fitness classes. This includes sessions that cover strength and conditioning, mind and body classes, and cardio workouts.

Members can stay connected while working out with their complimentary WiFi service, so you can stream your favourite tunes or follow virtual workouts seamlessly.

Sadly, some users have reported that half of the cable equipment is missing, and the gym’s dumbbells go up to only 38 kg, which might be insufficient for serious lifters.

Keep in mind that the changing rooms are not available for use between 1 AM and 3 AM. This could be inconvenient if you prefer to work out during those late hours.

Also, The Gym Group does not permit the charging or storing of e-scooters or e-bikes on-site due to fire safety concerns. If you rely on these modes of transportation, you might need to make alternative arrangements.

  • Invests in new fitness equipment
  • Can choose from over 100 classes per week
  • Has 40 spin bikes on-site
  • Also offers virtual spinning classes
  • Exclusive memberships discounts

Cons

  • Pricey
  • Issues with equipment maintenance

Village Gym offers an impressive range of facilities, including access to an indoor, heated swimming pool, a sauna, a steam room, and a whirlpool. We think this adds a luxurious touch to your workout routine and offers relaxation options post-workout.

Members can also enjoy up to 4 hours of free parking in secure areas monitored by CCTV.

It has invested in new fitness equipment, including Air Assault Bikes and Ski Ergs. These additions enhance your workout experience by providing resistance and full-body engagement.

Fitness enthusiasts can choose from over 100 classes per week, covering a wide range of options, from Aqua and Tai Chi to the latest HIIT, cycle, and cardio classes. Les Mills classes like BodyPump and BodyAttack are also on the menu.

With 40 spin bikes, it provides an ideal setting for instructor-led or virtual spinning classes, catering to cycling enthusiasts.

It has partnered with leading fashion brands to offer exclusive discounts to its members. You can enjoy savings on popular brands like Nike, ASOS, Adidas, and more.

Members can also benefit from discounts at hotel and restaurant partners, making it more than just a gym membership but also a lifestyle perk.

One notable downside we observed is the relatively high membership cost. Monthly memberships start from £73.70, making it a substantial financial commitment for some.

Some members have reported issues with equipment maintenance, such as the spinner to dry swimsuits being out of order for an extended period – 6 months.

3. LIFT Gyms

Pros

  • Member education portal with over 2000+ tailored recipes
  • Offers a semi-private personal training program
  • Complimentary 1-day pass online
  • Offers a variety of classes
  • Wide range of weight training equipment

Cons

  • A tad pricier
  • Limited range of amenities
  • Opens comparatively later on weekends

LIFT offers exclusive access to a member education portal with over 2000+ tailored recipes. We believe this is a valuable resource for those looking to maintain a balanced diet alongside their fitness regimen.

They also offer a semi-private personal training (SPPT) program that provides structured science-backed workouts. It’s a solid alternative to one-on-one personal training.

Prospective members can enjoy a complimentary 1-day pass by registering online. This allows you to experience the gym firsthand before committing to a membership.

LIFT also offers a variety of classes, including circuit training, strong workouts, Hyrox sessions, as well as lift yoga. We think this diversity provides something for everyone.

As the name suggests, LIFT takes its weight training seriously. With a plethora of free weights, resistance machines, and Eleiko combo racks known for powerlifting, you’ll find around 30 lifting stations equipped with squat racks.

We do feel that their memberships are a tad pricey. Gym-only memberships are £50 per month, while memberships with classes are £65 per month, and if you opt for semi-private training, it can be considerably more at £197 per month.

LIFT’s focus is primarily on the fitness essentials, so it may lack some of the additional amenities and luxuries offered by larger gym chains. Be sure to evaluate your priorities when it comes to gym features.

If you’re an early riser on weekends, please note that LIFT opens at 8 AM, which could be later than what you’re accustomed to.

  • Offers Concept 2 and circuit classes
  • Affordable membership prices
  • Friendly staff and atmosphere

Cons

  • Operates only half-days on weekends
  • Limited range of classes

Energy Gym offers a wide variety of fitness equipment, including cardio and Cybex machines, free weights, squat racks, TRX, ropes, sandbags, and even an outdoor boxing area. They seem to have all the tools you need for a well-rounded workout.

Whether you’re a fan of traditional cardio machines or prefer something more unique, Energy Gym has something for you. They feature assault bikes, ski ergs, rowers, curves, and cross trainers, catering to a range of cardio preferences.

For strength enthusiasts, they also offer strongman equipment, including logs, farmer’s carries, and atlas stones. We think this shows how they can accommodate various strength and fitness training styles.

You can also book exclusive “no share” member pods, which not all gyms offer. This provides members with dedicated workout spaces, allowing them to have privacy.

Energy Gym offers Concept 2 classes, which are high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts using ski, row, and cycling ergs, as well as circuit classes. These would be great for those who enjoy structured group workouts,

Membership options start at just £29.99 per month, making it an affordable choice for those on a budget.

Customers have praised Energy Gym for its friendly atmosphere, with one stating that it is the friendliest gym she has ever been a member of. We believe this is great for beginners who might be a bit shy.

Do note that it operates only half-days on weekends.

Also, while they offer circuit classes and Concept 2 classes, their range of classes may be limited compared to larger gyms.

Cons

  • Reports of hygiene issues
  • Class cancellations on weekends

PureGym is another solid choice for a gym membership. It’s open 24/7, offering flexibility to work out at any time that suits your schedule.

Unlike other gyms, they offer no-contract memberships. This means you’re not tied into a long-term commitment, giving you the freedom to adapt your membership as needed.

The gym also has free Wi-Fi and air conditioning, enhancing your overall experience.

PureGym offers dumbbells up to 50KG, surpassing some other gyms that have lower weight thresholds. We think this is good news for strength training enthusiasts.

Members can enjoy a range of fitness classes – more than 50 – and the best part is that these classes are free to book. You can also book classes up to 14 days in advance, ensuring you secure your spot in your preferred sessions.

Another perk that we really appreciate is that members can bring a friend up to four times a month, making it a social and motivating experience.

For those interested in Olympic weightlifting, PureGym has a dedicated platform for this specialised training.

It also offers a large free weights area, functional area, cycle studio, and fitness studio with all the equipment you need to achieve your fitness goals.

With a monthly fee of only £26.99, PureGym provides budget-friendly membership options.

Sadly, some customers have reported that the “cleaning stations” are poorly maintained, which can affect hygiene standards.

Also, it appears that classes are consistently cancelled on the weekends, which may inconvenience those who prefer weekend workouts or classes.
