A few months back, a friend of mine was searching high and low for an English tutor to help his immigrant cousin settle into life in Glasgow. She had just arrived and was eager to improve her English to better navigate daily life and eventually land a job.
We started exploring options, from language centres with flexible schedules to private tutors known for their one-on-one coaching. Along the way, we were surprised at how many incredible educators are out there, blending patience with clever strategies.
After seeing how quickly her confidence grew, we knew these tutors deserved a spotlight. So, whether you’re learning for school, work, or just everyday fluency, here are Glasgow’s top English tutors who’ll help you gain mastery and learn faster.
How much does an English tutor cost in Glasgow?
In Glasgow, the cost for an English tutor typically ranges from £15 to £35 per hour, with the average price being around £18 to £25. Rates vary depending on the tutor’s experience, whether the lesson is online or in-person, and the level of mastery (e.g., National 5, Higher, or A-Level).

When my friend started searching for an English tutor for his cousin, we came across First Tutors. We liked that the platform showed us tutor profiles with verified reviews, academic backgrounds, and subject coverage.
We eventually hired a female tutor who focused on building confidence through structured reading and writing exercises. According to my friend, his cousin’s sessions were very focused, with both grammar drills and practical writing tasks.
We also appreciate how First Tutors offers the flexibility to switch between in-person and online options!
However, while their website is functional, navigating the platform isn’t as smooth as it could be. Search filters can be clunky, and contacting tutors sometimes requires more clicks than expected.
Still, once connected with the right tutor, the quality of teaching delivered, and my friend’s cousin improved her vocabulary and communication skills in just a short amount of time.
By the way, aside from language, you’ll also find tutors for math, music, and other subject areas—many of them open to weekend sessions or online formats.
Very committed and professional tutors
“I found First Tutors: Music via an internet search and chose them because I was impressed by their professionalism and was looking for an Agency with a business model based on charging a simple Introduction fee rather than ongoing commission for each lesson. Occasionally they can appear overly strict but this is also evidence of their undoubted professional attitude and commitment to quality. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a music teacher.”

We explored Tutorful while comparing English tutors in Glasgow and were impressed by how streamlined the process felt. Their site gave us access to a large network of qualified professionals with clear profiles showing education, teaching experience, and pricing.
We messaged four tutors and heard back from three within a few minutes. One tutor had over 10 years of experience with GCSE and A-level English.
She also offered a trial session and explained her session structure—focused on building comprehension through active discussion, writing analysis, and timed writing practice.
What we like most was how personalised everything felt. Each tutor asked about goals, past struggles, and even learning preferences before making any suggestions.
The platform also made scheduling very simple, with built-in calendar tools and secure payment processing. They offer help in a wide range of subjects.
However, there’s no in-person option and everything, including customer service, is handled online. If you’re someone who prefers face-to-face interactions before committing, this setup may not work for you.
But if flexibility and variety are your priorities, Tutorful delivers.
Really wonderful experience
“My experience has been really good, i had Hannah as my tutor and she has been so supportive and understanding through everything. She helped me keep on track with everything throughout our sessions, made me understand a lot more of my work than i did previously. This made me have a better understanding of where i really needed to improve. I definitely recommend Hannah as she is brilliant and gives the best support and help you need. I am extremely grateful for my experience and all the support i have been given.”

Let’s get straight it it—the tutoring support at the University of Glasgow comes at a premium. Whether you’re looking for help with English academic writing, IELTS preparation, or just general language support, expect to pay more than you would through private platforms.
That said, what you’re getting here is more than just tutoring—you’re tapping into academic mentorship backed by a globally recognised institution.
We reached out to the Language Centre and were introduced to several options for English support. The university offers both one-to-one academic writing guidance and language workshops designed for international and postgraduate students.
Tutors are highly qualified, most with years of experience teaching academic English. Their approach is structured—they blend theoretical concepts with practical exercises, like annotated readings, essay breakdowns, and feedback sessions.
One tutor even mentioned tailoring lessons to the student’s field of study, whether ot’s law, science, or humanities.
The university’s campus in Glasgow’s West End also adds to the experience—quiet, accessible, and ideal for in-person sessions.
High quality tutors
“Truly Magnificent University with high detailed medieval building style which could truly attract the spectators. Education quality and professor response is truly appreciable. The University is having highly sophisticated building and infrastructure. It’s a dream place for many students around the world.”

MyTutor boasts a well-set-up system that’s helpful for initial discovery. Through their user-friendly website, you can browse tutors by subject, see their credentials, and message them directly.
We spoke with three different English tutors—two specialising in GCSE prep and one focused on creative writing for younger learners. All of them explained their teaching methods clearly and shared sample lesson outlines.
They generally use interactive tools during sessions and follow up with structured feedback reports after each class.
However, the pricing model raised some concerns. MyTutor charges parents significantly more than what tutors receive.
We asked about this directly, and while tutors acknowledged they love teaching through the platform, most said they felt the system wasn’t fair.
Despite this hiccup, the quality of instruction remains strong, and the feedback loop between tutor, student, and parent is very consistent.
Impressive professional approach
“We’ve used My Tutor for my daughters. Jess taught my eldest during her A Levels and helped massively with her grades and confidence. I really liked the professional approach and was impressed by her teaching style – she was always very helpful. More recently we contacted My Tutor again and Sara made a real effort in finding the right tutor. Would definitely recommend My Tutor”

We reached out to The Education Academy Scotland to explore their English tutoring offerings and were immediately struck by how different their setup felt compared to standard tuition centres.
Their tutors don’t follow a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, they structure sessions around each student’s goal—whether that’s improving literacy for primary pupils, preparing for SQA English exams, or building confidence in academic writing.
We spoke with one of their coordinators who walked us through their teaching model: small groups or one-on-one options, highly interactive sessions, and regular progress reviews. They also emphasise practical application—something we appreciated.
English is just one of the many subjects offered, alongside STEM, social sciences, and even creative workshops. Their learning centre is based in Glasgow, but they also offer some online support.
Tutors are fully qualified educators, and several have years of classroom experience, which reflects in their structured, school-aligned methods.
The only drawback is pricing. The Education Academy runs at a premium rate, especially for families looking for longer-term support.
Phenomenal tutors
“Saturday school has helped improve my confidence in chemistry and has resulted in my grades and overall tracking improving. Highly recommend. Tutors are phenomenal!”
