Pros
- Provides flexible, quality healthcare
- The capital’s oldest private GP clinic
- Appointments can last up to 45 minutes
- Has two doctors available
- Offers private medicals
- Has Occupational Health and company doctoring services
Cons
- Terrible handwriting
- Steep referral prices
Due to an increasing demand for flexible, quality healthcare within Scotland, Dr. Peter Copp established GP-Plus. This demonstrates his dedication to providing quality healthcare to his patients.
They’re also the capital’s oldest private GP clinic, having been formed in 1999. We think its experience is important for patients who value long-standing reputations.
First, we appreciate their reputation for unhurried appointments. Patients are given enough time to discuss concerns, and the doctor provides a comprehensive treatment plan.
It has two doctors available for patients to choose from. This is important for patients who feel more comfortable seeing a doctor of a particular gender or background.
Furthermore, they offer private medicals, which can be tailored for individuals or to suit company requirements. Individuals can receive more timely and personalised healthcare, which can be critical for early detection and treatment.
The clinic also has Occupational Health and company doctoring services that cover medicals, global assessment forms, and vaccination programmes. This is important to ensure their employees are well taken care of.
However, some patients have reported terrible handwriting from their doctors, which can be frustrating. This is a small issue (and we know that doctors notoriously have bad penmanship to begin with!), but it can cause problems for patients.
We also heard reports of patients being charged up to £200 for a simple referral, which is quite steep compared to other private GP practices. This can be a drawback for patients who are seeking affordable healthcare options.

Pros
- All GP consultations are conducted as a telephone triage
- Offers house calls
- Has a Child Health and Immunisation Clinic
- Also offers Antenatal Care
- Comparatively affordable services
Cons
- Patients should book well in advance
- Inefficient booking system
- Reports of GPs giving conflicting diagnosis
We think West End Medical Practice is another solid Edinburgh medical practice. They’re made up of several doctors that can provide top-notch medical care.
Our staff member’s GP consultation was conducted as a telephone triage, meaning he spoke to a GP first, and they decided whether a video call or surgery was necessary. This saved him a lot of time and ensured that the right course of action was taken.
Unlike other clinics, they actually offer house calls. We think this is particularly helpful for elderly patients who may find it difficult to travel to the surgery.
The practice also has a Child Health and Immunisation Clinic run by their health visitor on Friday afternoons. This is a great service for parents who want to ensure their child is up-to-date with their vaccinations and overall health.
In addition, Antenatal Care is provided by their midwife. We think this is a vital service for expectant mothers and ensures that they receive the care and support they need throughout their pregnancy.
We like how their services are comparatively more affordable. For instance, a Private Medical Referral Form costs £60, while it can cost up to £200 elsewhere.
Since the practice is very popular, it’s best to book well in advance. Unfortunately, we found their online and over-the-phone booking system to be quite frustrating and ineffective, which is a major drawback.
Another major issue is that apparently, some GPs provided conflicting diagnosis. This can be confusing and potentially harmful to the patient’s health.
3. Green Practice

Pros
- Teaching and training practice
- Comprehensive disability access
- Medical forms and reports
- Offers home visits
- Specialises in child well-being
- Offers services to temporary residents
Cons
- Closed from Fridays to Sundays
- Reports of rude receptionists
Green Practice is a teaching and training practice with a longstanding interest in helping to train medical students and postgraduate doctors. This means that patients can expect to receive high-quality medical care from well-trained professionals.
We appreciated the comprehensive disability access of this clinic. For instance, we noticed that all patient toilets had wheelchair access, and there was a lift to all floors.
In fact, we were informed that a hearing loop is actually in place at the front reception desk. Also, patients can request a large print/audio/or Braille version of their leaflet.
Their GPs also complete many reports and forms, including critical illness insurance, life insurance, fitness for military training, and DVLA reports. This is a valuable service for patients who need these forms completed quickly and efficiently.
The practice also offers home visits, which is an important service for patients who are unable to travel.
Additionally, it specialises in child well-being, making it a great option for parents who want to ensure their child’s health is in good hands.
Unlike other clinics, they offer services to temporary residents. This means that if you’re in Edinburgh for a short period and need medical attention, you can still receive care from a trusted practice.
However, they’re closed from Fridays to Sundays, which can be inconvenient for patients who need medical attention on the weekends.
Additionally, there have been reports of rude receptionists. This can be off-putting for patients who expect to be treated with respect and courtesy.
4. Liberton Medical Group

Pros
- Provides comprehensive NHS primary care services
- Offers ‘teenage-friendly’ services
- Also offers NHS Out-of-Hours services
- Has a Patient Transport service
- Has a unique Gluten-free Food Service
- Competitively-priced services
Cons
- Might be difficult to secure a booking
- Reports of doctors not solving medical issues
Liberton Medical Group is another clinic that is worth visiting in Edinburgh. They provide comprehensive NHS primary care services to help patients manage their health and well-being.
A unique feature they have is that they offer services which are ‘teenage-friendly.’ Meaning, they’re a great option for young people who may need medical care but feel more comfortable with a doctor who understands their needs.
Another great feature we appreciate is their NHS Out-of-Hours services. This ensures that patients can receive the care they need, no matter the time of day.
The practice also has a Patient Transport service, which provides ambulances to patients who need support to attend their appointment. This service can be a lifeline for those who would otherwise be physically unable to go there.
Also, this practice has a unique Gluten-free Food Service for people that need to eat gluten-free foods as part of their care. All gluten-free foods are provided free-of-charge, which we think is such a significant cost-saving measure.
Furthermore, we noticed that this practice offers competitively-priced services, such as their home service which is only £130. This is more affordable than in some other clinics.
However, the practice offers only a handful of pre-bookable appointments for 2-3 weeks in advance. This made it difficult for our team member to schedule her appointment at her preferred time.
Additionally, there have been reports of doctors not solving the medical issues of patients. We hope they improve their services as this can be frustrating for patients.
5. Dr A Comiskey and Partners

Pros
- Has a combined 50 years of medical experience
- Has 11 doctors available
- Also a training practice
- Offers Chronic Medication Service
- Highly-trained practice nurses
- Offers repeat prescriptions
Cons
- Reports of doctors not solving their issues
- Reception staff were said to be rude and unfriendly
- Relatively limited range of services
Dr. A Comiskey and Partners is another top-notch medical practice located in Edinburgh. In fact, the practice’s team of doctors has a combined 50 years of industry experience, which makes them experts in our eyes.
Unlike the other clinics we visited, we found that the practice has 11 doctors available instead of just one or two. This means that patients have a higher chance of seeing a doctor who can meet their needs.
They’re also a training practice that recognises the importance of medical education within the team and for those undergoing training programmes. Meaning, patients can benefit from the latest medical knowledge and techniques.
Furthermore, the practice offers Chronic Medication Service (CMS) for people with long-term conditions such as high blood pressure or asthma. This service is not being offered in all clinics.
We appreciate how their practice nurses are highly trained and specialise in the management of long-term conditions. For instance, they run specialist clinics in diabetes, coronary heart disease, respiratory disease, and sexual health.
The practice also offers repeat prescriptions, which is a convenient service for patients who need to refill their medication regularly.
On the downside, some patients have reported that the doctors did not resolve their concerns, which we think is a significant drawback.
Also, we found the reception staff to be rude and unfriendly. We think patients seeking medical care do not deserve this type of treatment.
Lastly, the range of services they offer is relatively limited, which can be an issue for patients requiring specific medical treatments or procedures.
