Pros

  • Open all week and open until late at night
  • Has an extensive vegetarian selection
  • Set meals for 2, 3, and 4 people
  • Student and NHS discounts for takeaways
  • Delicious duck dishes
  • Great salt and pepper chicken

Cons

  • Some food issues
  • Not the best ambiance

If you’re looking for a traditional Chinese takeaway and restaurant in Dundee, then Chopstix might just be the place for you.

The restaurant is open all week, which is great. Plus, the place is open until late at night, which is perfect for those late-night cravings.

We were actually impressed by their extensive vegetarian selection. It’s always good to see a restaurant catering to all dietary needs.

They also offer set meals for 2, 3, and 4 people. This not only makes it easy to order, but it can also be more cost-effective.

If you’re a student or NHS worker, then you’re in luck as they offer discounts on all takeaway orders.

We’re happy to report that their roast duck in plum sauce and their crispy aromatic duck were absolutely excellent. The duck in both dishes was tender, juicy, and full of flavour.

The salt and pepper chicken was also a hit, with just the right amount of spice to add a bit of kick to the dish.

However, their spring rolls were a little on the dry side and lacked the crispiness that we expected from this dish. The prawn toast was also disappointing; it was quite bland with a thick, soggy texture.

Also, the restaurant itself is quite small and a bit dark, so it might not be the most Instagrammable of places. But, we think what it lacks in aesthetics, it makes up for in tasty, authentic Chinese food.

2. The Manchurian

Pros

  • Has over 30 years of experience
  • Offers vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options
  • Has karaoke and available for catering
  • Great authentic Chinese vibe and wheelchair accessible
  • Has special set dinners
  • Delicious Cantonese-style duck, fried rice, and king prawns in Mandarin sauce

Cons

  • Some dishes were bland
  • Order mix-ups
  • Closed on Wednesdays

The Manchurian is another Dundee-based restaurant that serves traditional and authentic Chinese food. With over 30 years of experience, we think they’re worth checking out.

We do like how they offer vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options, ensuring that everyone can enjoy their food.

Unlike other restaurants, they do have karaoke, which is perfect for anyone looking to have a fun night out. They also cater for special occasions, making it a great option for those who want to celebrate in style.

We thought the restaurant itself has a great authentic Chinese vibe, both inside and out, which is sure to transport you to another world. It’s also wheelchair accessible, which is always a plus.

If you’re looking for a deal, they do offer special set dinners for 2, 3, and 4 people from £18.50 to £36.50. This is a great way to sample a variety of dishes at a reasonable price.

Speaking of dishes, we thought their Cantonese-style duck and special fried rice were both amazing, as was their king prawns in Mandarin sauce.

However, there were a couple of downsides to our experience. The honey chilli shredded beef was a little bland, lacking the flavour that we were hoping for.

Additionally, we were given the wrong order, and when we told the waiter about it, our dish was taken away without any apologies or explanation.

It’s also worth noting that they’re closed on Wednesdays, so do plan accordingly.

Pros

  • Chinese fusion buffet restaurant
  • Open all week
  • Elegant and clean wood-forward aesthetic
  • Has vegetarian options
  • Competitively-priced
  • Has gift vouchers
  • Yummy chicken mushroom curry and ribs in Peking sauce

Cons

  • Issues with seafood
  • Felt a bit rushed by the staff

We think those who love Chinese fusion cuisine would enjoy Yamm Buffet. They also offer Japanese, Italian, and Indian cuisine, so there’s something here for everyone.

The restaurant is open all week, making it a great option for a mid-week lunch or a weekend dinner with friends and family.

Upon entering, we felt the place itself has an elegant feel, with its whimsical lighting and a clean, wood-forward aesthetic.

For those with dietary requirements, they have vegetarian options available, ensuring that everyone can enjoy their food.

We also felt they offer competitive prices, with the lunch buffet ranging from £12 to £14.99 and dinner buffet at £19.50.

It’s also worth noting that they offer gift vouchers, which would make a great present for friends and family.

If you’re looking for specific dishes to try, we highly recommend the chicken mushroom curry. Its blend of aromatic spices and chicken was complemented by the earthy taste of the mushrooms.

We also loved their ribs in Peking sauce. The succulent meat coupled with the sweet and tangy Peking sauce was quite exquisite.

However, some of the seafood dishes were a little overcooked, which was disappointing as we were hoping for something fresh and succulent. Additionally, some of the food was lukewarm, which detracted from the overall experience.

We also felt a bit rushed by the staff during our meal. This meant that we didn’t have as much time as we would have liked to savour our food.

Pros

  • Internationally renowned noodle bar
  • Customisable meals
  • Has vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options
  • All noodles cooked to order
  • Great curry noodles with veggies and spicy coconut with extra veggies

Cons

  • Some sauces a tad salty
  • Not the most generous serving sizes
  • Some unaccommodating staff

Dr. Noodles in Dundee is an internationally renowned noodle bar that is definitely worth a visit. The restaurant has a clean and modern vibe, which creates a fantastic atmosphere for enjoying delicious food.

It’s open all week, so you can enjoy your favourite dishes any day of the week.

Also, you can create your own combination by mixing sauces, vegetables, and fillings. This means that you can have a unique dish each time you visit.

The restaurant caters to different dietary needs, including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. This is a huge plus for those with specific dietary requirements.

We also appreciate that all noodles are cooked to order, ensuring freshness.

During our visit, we tried the curry noodles with veggies, and they were absolutely delicious. The combination of the rich, creamy curry sauce with the noodles and vegetables was simply outstanding.

We also tried the spicy coconut noodles with extra veggies, and they were just as yummy. The coconut sauce was creamy and sweet, with a subtle hint of spice that complemented the noodles and vegetables perfectly.

However, we felt that their black bean sauce was far too salty, which made it difficult to enjoy the dish. We also found that their portions were a bit small, which left us feeling a bit unsatisfied.

Lastly, some members of staff were not accommodating, which made our visit a bit uncomfortable. They seemed disinterested and unresponsive to our queries and weren’t willing to offer any suggestions.

Pros

  • Specialises in Pekingese cuisine
  • Casual, no-frills setting
  • Has a full bar and open until 10 PM
  • Offers vegetarian dishes
  • Delicious spring rolls and chicken with broccoli in oyster sauce
  • Also yummy Chinese chicken curry

Cons

  • Some dishes had issues
  • Long wait times
  • Slightly pricier

If you’re looking for a place to enjoy Pekingese cuisine in Dundee, Mandarin Garden is definitely worth a try. We appreciate its casual setting, which is perfect for those who are looking for a no-frills dining experience.

Additionally, the restaurant has a full bar, so you can enjoy a drink with your meal. They’re also open until 10 PM, making it a great option for those who want to grab a late dinner.

For those who want to enjoy Chinese cuisine without any meat, then you’re in luck. They have a wide selection of vegetarian dishes to choose from.

When it comes to the food, we were particularly impressed with their spring rolls. They were crispy and full of flavour.

We also loved the chicken with broccoli in oyster sauce. The chicken was cooked to perfection, and the oyster sauce had a perfect balance of savoury and sweet.

The Chinese chicken curry was also a standout dish, easily the best we’ve had in Dundee.

Unfortunately, not every dish we tried was a hit. The squid with green pepper was very oily and salty, which we felt was a bit of a letdown.

Another downside was the long wait time. It took us an hour to get our food, which was quite frustrating.

Lastly, we found the prices to be slightly higher than some other Chinese restaurants in the area. A set meal for 4 costs £52 here, while others with the same amount of food cost around £36.
