The Top 5 Home Health Care Providers in Scotland for Compassionate Care

  • Qualifications - Qualified care professionals are a given to ensure the patients receive proper care. But it’s also important for them to be compassionate and show professionalism throughout.
  • Range of Services and Care Planning - The more care services they offer, the more patients they can cater to. The planning process should also be clear and efficient to avoid mishaps and gaps in the overall service.
  • Availability and Communication - The carer and the management must provide smooth communication to avoid misunderstandings. Also, receiving the same carer can make the patient feel more at ease due to familiarity.
  • Fee Transparency - The rates must be clear at all times to avoid surprise charges.

Hiring a care professional wasn’t something I thought I would do. I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that our parents will always be present and strong, but as we grow older, so do they.

Perhaps it was when my mum’s knees started aching constantly, or when she missed her medication two days in a row. But once she finally accepted that she needed constant supervision, my siblings and I immediately called for a care provider.

It’s a sad reality, but it’s needed. We can’t always be there for our loved ones 24/7, so we need to ask for help every now and again.

So, to help you get the support you need, we reviewed the most trusted home health care providers in Scotland. Read on to know where your loved one will always be a priority.

Oran Care has a wide reach, providing home health care services in Central and East Scotland. They’re highly accessible in terms of care programs as well, as they cater to patients with varying needs.

If you take a quick look at their services, you’ll see that they offer personal, live-in, and hourly care. All these meet the needs of the elderly, whether they require constant support or just extra help during the day.

Patients will receive typical care, such as companionship and assistance with light domestic tasks. Plus, their carers provide social visits, like meeting friends, which most families we surveyed requested for their loved ones with mobility challenges.

Here, we were delighted to learn that things are elevated through their technology-enabled care. Essentially, they use assistive tech, like motion sensors, to safely monitor your loved ones—highly useful for patients with dementia.

The catch is, their hourly care has a limited service area. But all in all, they still cover The Lothians, Fife, Perth, and Kincross.

Pros

  • Complete care services
  • Available for live-in and hourly care
  • Provides tech-enabled care
  • Covers Central and East Scotland

Cons

  • Hourly care has a limited service area

Extremely professional

“Oran provided care for a close relative. Extremely professional carers and reliable, highly recommend.”

Goes above and beyond to meet my mother’s needs

“5.0 out of 5 We use Oran Care to manage the care of our elderly mother while we are living internationally. We feel extremely lucky to have found a care company who genuinely care and can communicate with us well despite the difference in time zones. The carers that go into the home are friendly, social and go above and beyond to meet her needs in our absence. We really can’t put a price on that sort of peace of mind!”

The care services provided by Home Instead are remarkably vast, which is one of the reasons they’re one of our top choices. Every little thing is sorted in this place, whether you’re searching for basic personal care or needing complex health care.

Let’s begin with their domiciliary care, which provides home care for patients who want to regain their independence. Their care providers are available in the daytime and overnight, giving family caregivers a nice break.

But what truly stood out was their health care services, providing tailored support for your loved ones with health conditions that require extensive support. Their carers are qualified for gastrostomy care, vital signs monitoring, and feeding support.

Furthermore, their home health carers will continue to liaise with the patient’s doctors and nurses to ensure every single need is met. It’s rather thorough, although not all health-specific care services are available at their Stirling location.

The tailored support offsets this. Most families noted how flexible the carers and the management were in providing proper care.

Pros

  • Provides domiciliary and health care
  • Accommodates complex health needs
  • Carers communicate with the patient’s health team
  • Tailored support

Cons

  • Not all health services are available

Outstanding support and care

“Outstanding support and care. We are incredibly grateful for the exceptional care that Home Instead provides for my mother who lives with Parkinson’s and dementia. They bring patience, understanding and genuine compassion to every visit which has made a huge difference in our mother’s comfort and quality of life. What also means so much to our family is the way the keep an eye on our 84-yr old father who is our mother’s primary carer in their absence. They offer him reassurance, support and practical help that eases the pressure on him and gives us all peace of mind. We feel very fortunate to have Home Instead in our lives and we whole-heartedly recommend them to any family looking for a skilled, trustworthy and truly supporting care company.”

The Good Care Group is a highly recognised home health care provider in Scotland, receiving various awards and commendations for its overall outstanding services. It really wasn’t a surprise, to be honest, given what we’ve seen.

During our inquiries and client surveys, we learned that professionalism and compassion are two things patients will receive here (and that’s what we want). Plus, the nurse-led care ensures every patient receives proper assistance.

Most importantly, they accept patients with complex health conditions. And they know how to do the job right, considering their caregivers are led by a specialist consultant nurse, who has advanced expertise.

Availability is front and centre here, as they provide live-in and overnight care. The problem is that hourly care isn’t available in Scotland (only in London).

But things are fine, as long as they keep their emergency home care open, which is available within 24 hours of the initial request. And yes, they do assign a care professional at the drop of a hat.

Pros

  • Highly recognised home care provider
  • Nurse-led team
  • Has a specialist consultant nurse
  • Works with complex health conditions
  • Provides emergency home care

Cons

  • Hourly care isn’t available in Scotland

Professional, experienced, and compassionate

“The carer is professional, experienced, compassionate, knowledgeable, hard working, trustworthy, capable, has a lovely manner and a great rapport with her client. The service/administrative personnel are always on hand either by phone or email to advise and accomodate the client’s wishes. They also are very professional and pleasant and the process is quick and straight forward.”

Domiciliary care at 1st Focus Homecare is tailored exactly for the patient, which keeps the whole process smooth. The transition from personal care to more complex assistance—should it be needed—goes on without a hitch.

That’s because their services are flexible, whether you need hourly or live-in care. Every patient can receive the proper assistance they need, which is exactly why they’re one of our most trusted in-home care providers in Scotland.

For instance, they offer services for light housekeeping, meal preparation, companionship, errands, and medication help. Judging by our observations, their care professionals are always on top of things, even when the patient isn’t as cooperative.

But their coverage area isn’t as wide as we would’ve liked. They focus more on Edinburgh and the nearby areas.

If you’re within their range, we think you’ll be pleased with their process. We were thrilled to hear that their staff has been transparent about the costs of private home health care in Scotland, all without charging exorbitant prices.

Pros

  • Smooth transition of care
  • Flexible care services
  • Transparent about the billing
  • Reasonable costs

Cons

  • Service area isn’t vast

Always friendly and approachable

“1st Focus have looked after my aunt for several years now and I cannot fault them. Management and carers are always friendly and approachable no matter what the issues or concerns are. Can’t thank them enough for the work they do.”

What we found remarkable about Bluebird Care is the patient-centric care, which they’ve provided in Edinburgh for over 17 years. All sorts of care services can be found here, from personal to complex assistance.

We were most pleased by the professional support, day and night. Patients can receive assistance with bathing, dressing, doing errands, and maintaining a clean home.

In addition, the meal and nutrition assistance have been rather helpful for patients with specific dietary needs. It supports better food management, which can aid in healing for individuals needing home care after getting discharged from the hospital.

It’s a shame their children’s services aren’t available in their Edinburgh location, but they are in other branches.

Nonetheless, we were delighted by the professional approach of the carers. That said, a more proactive communication with the management would make things go smoothly.

The good thing is, once you’re done with the technicalities, you’ll receive exceptional care from their staff. It’s also a nice touch how you’ll get the same carer most of the time, which is always nice for familiarity, mainly for patients with dementia.

Pros

  • Provides personal to complex care
  • Offers nutrition management
  • Receive the same carer most of the time
  • Patient-centric care

Cons

  • Some communication gaps with the management
  • Children’s services aren’t available in Edinburgh

Delighted with the standard of care

“Bluebird Care have been supplying care for my Mother over the past 8 months and I have been delighted with the standard of care that she has received. Mum’s carer quickly became like one of the family whilst delivering a professional level of care. I never thought Mum would accept a live in carer in her home as she always fiercely protected her independence and didn’t want a stranger living in her home but it has worked out perfectly. I would not hesitate to recommend this company.”

Time-keeping is always spot on

“I’m very happy with the service I get, all the carers that have came in always give you 101% and no job is refused when you ask. Time keeping is always spot on, very very friendly staff. I like when I have regular carers come in and when I’m not well they know my exact Routine. The carers Rebecca, Shell, Prima and Dion are great and are happy to assist with anything I need. Also any communication to the office with Cara and Chelsea is dealt with professionally and any issues quickly resolved. Sandra Hunter”
