Stockbridge Eating House has an intimate setting, thanks to its compact dining area, which creates a bistro-meets-living-room ambiance. Expect to see around 18 covers, with a communal-style eating—there are three long tables—plus a couple of seats by the window.

Their menu places a strong emphasis on seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, so it changes daily, and sometimes twice a day. You might see their bone marrow on toast on the menu, or catch their monkfish cheeks, and rhubarb compote over rice pudding for dessert.

Given that the menu is ingredient-driven, there are some vegetarian options you can try, but most of the time, you won’t be able to get vegan items. So, it’s a good idea to ask your server for any recommendations or alternatives they can offer for dietary needs.

Pro tip:
You can try to time your visit for the set lunch: the £14.95 three-course lunch is a steal. You can even pair it with their £10.50 carafe of wine to get the most value.

If you need a tapas fix, Cafe Andaluz Stockbridge is a solid bet. First things first, the interior of the place deserves some praise; it’s quite roomy, bright, and it’s inspired by classic Spanish designs. It can easily accommodate about 120 people, which means it can handle a crowd.

They cover a broad spectrum of Spanish tapas; think seafood, meat, vegetarian, and also paella-style dishes. If you’re not familiar with tapas, you can try some of the crowd-pleasers, such as Gambas Pil Pil, Paella Tapa, and Tahine de Cordero. Don’t miss out on their churros, too.

As for their drinks, you can explore Spanish wines, cava, and cocktails like Café Carajillo (espresso with brandy). If you want to go for the safe route that easily pairs well with sharing tapas, then the Sangria will do.

Pro tip:
Even though it’s quite roomy, booking is still advisable since it’s popular, especially for dinner and weekends. Also, try to visit on a weekday for lunch to make the most out of their affordable set menu deals—it’s less crowded, too.

Menu

Franco Manca sits in a former bank building, which means you can see the old architecture, and it also has a clock-tower facade that makes it sort of a landmark. It’s also lovely that they have outdoor seating by the Water of Leight, plus, you can bring your pup with you, too.

You might’ve caught it from their name; this is an Italian restaurant specialising in sourdough pizza. There’s a lot to go through their menu; to narrow it down, you can try their Margherita, spicy salami, truffle and burrata, and the Nutella pizza or Affogato for dessert.

You can also choose from several pizzas and starters that cater to vegetarians, while gluten-free items can be seen on their menu. And ask the server for Italian wine recommendations, or try their cocktails like an Aperol Spritz.

Pro tip:
To add a little oomph to your experience, order a few dips like garlic, hot honey, and ‘nduja, so you can dip the crust and turn it into a highlight dish.

Menu

It’s no surprise that Nok’s Kitchen feels like a hole in the wall, considering it’s housed in a 17th-century townhouse, giving it a historic backdrop paired with modern touches. As you step in, the space feels snug and intimate but not cramped—it makes for a nice date spot.

This place is primarily a Thai restaurant that offers a wide range of traditional and creative Thai dishes. And yes, they have Pad Thai (a standout, too), but you can also try their seabass green curry and Gaeng phet ped yang or their grilled duck red curry.

If you’re arriving as a group, they have a sharing menu which can usually serve four people. For instance, a sharing starter platter can get you items like satay, fish cakes, tempura, and more, with mains like massaman curry or stir-fired steak, which is quite the feast.

Pro tip:
Try their seafood starter, dishes like prawn-stuffed dumplings or scallops with XO sauce are a real treat. And if you’re not good with spice, then don’t try to go for it. Thai spice is in its own category; just tell the server to tone down the heat.

Menu

Tucked down a few steps in a cosy basement space, Purslane Restaurant is definitely up there when it comes to fine dining around the area, even though they consider themselves  “casual fine-dining.” This place only has 9 tables, so it feels more personal and quiet.

Menu-wise, it draws on international influences, and about 80% of their produce is sourced from businesses in or near Stockbridge, making their dishes incredibly fresh. They usually offer 5-course or 7-course tasting menus, ideal for special events or date nights.

Since they change their menu often, you can expect things like lamb’s liver with caramelised onions, or roasted hake with potato croquettes and brown shrimp. As for desserts, expect seasonal fruit, plated treats, or petit fours.

Pro tip:
Don’t forget to mention your dietary preferences when booking, whether it’s gluten-free, vegetarian, or allergies. They take time to walk you through the menu and make sure each course works for you.

Skua

Address: 49 St Stephen St

Contact details: [email protected]

Operating hours:

  • Tuesday: 5 PM – 10 PM
  • Wednesday to Thursday: 5 PM – 10:30 PM
  • Friday to Saturday: 5 PM – 12 AM

Pricing: ££

Website

Menu

Skua has a chic, moody, intimate atmosphere since it’s tucked into this sort of basement space. And you’ll see black everywhere: black walls, marble tabletops, brass hardware, and soft candlelight.

You’ll find small plates and sharing-style dishes on their menu, and they use techniques like pickling, fermenting, smoking, and grilling (including a konro grill) to get a deeper flavour. Some notable dishes include Trout Pastrami, Skua fried chicken, and braised shallot.

It’s also cool how they take drinks, especially cocktails, to another level. For example, their Stockbridge Sour has a mix of whisky and Douglas fir, and the Kim’s Chi is a combination of mezcal and kimchi—quite unusual, but it works.

Pro tip:
Since the menu is designed for sharing, pick a few savoury plates like their scallop and chicken plus a vegetable or salad-style dish, that way you get a well-rounded meal.

The Captain Darling

Operating hours: Monday to Sunday: 12 AM – 12 PM

Pricing: ££

Website

Menu

Straight away, you can see how The Captain Darling has a brasserie-style bar and restaurant vibe, given how it’s designed to feel like a warm, social hub rather than a stiff dining room. It’s great that they have a designated bar area—ideal for dropping in—and a separate dining area.

After giving their menu a quick browse, you’ll spot seasonal comfort classics like prawn cocktail, savoury pies, and grilled meats. They even have a roast menu, with items like rare-breed pork pancetta or dry-aged sirloin roast beef.

For their bar offerings, they have a decent lineup of beers, world wines, specialty spirits, and classic cocktails.

Pro tip:
You can score better deals like their Evening Darling Set Menu (usually on Mondays to Fridays, 4-6 PM). This gives you a 2-course meal for about £25, or 3 courses for £28. Catch their Workers’ Lunch deal for around £12.5 (weekdays, 12-3 PM).

Sotto Enoteca & Trattoria is a lovely two-storey venue, upstairs is the Enoteca (wine bar) and downstairs is the Trattoria (restaurant). Starting off with their wine bar, it looks small, but they’ve got over 200 Italian wines, covering many regions.

For the best part, the Trattoria is a decent space that can accommodate about 36 people, with a small private room for up to 8 guests.

Blending Italian roots with Scottish produce, they have dishes like Gnocco Fritto, Aberdeen Angus Carpaccio, and Mezze Maniche with venison ragu.

Pro tip:
The menu changes seasonally, so let the server guide and recommend to you the freshest or most unique pasta dish of the day.

The Pantry

Operating hours: Monday to Sunday: 9 AM – 3 PM

Pricing: ££

Website

Menu

The Pantry is definitely a corner you wouldn’t want to miss. Surrounded by independent shops and situated near the Water of Leith, this brunch cafe has a warm and relaxed vibe. That said, it’s become like a “local hangout.”

Focusing on brunch and lunch (since it closes at 3 PM), you can expect to be served with dishes like Pantry Fry, featuring pork sausages, smoked bacon, black pudding, and more.

And since they’re more of a cafe, they have excellent coffee selections, such as espresso, flat white, latte, and more.

Pro tip:
Their waffles with blueberry compote can be quite generous, so consider splitting with your companion, and order something else with a different flavour profile to balance the sweetness.

Civerinos Stockbridge

Menu

Civerinos Stockbridge heavily leans on that old-school Italian-American diner feel: think dark wood, chequered tablecloths, vintage photos, and a laid-back energy.

Their primary focus is serving American pizza styles like New York, New Haven, Detroit, and Chicago. To name a few stars of the show, they offer their signature Civerinos pizza, confit garlic pizza and their Detroit-style slices.

You can also go for vegetarian and vegan pizzas made with vegan mozzarella and plant-based toppings. Gluten-free pizzas might be a hard one, though.

Pro tip:
If you want to try out different flavours, grab a few Detroit-style slices before committing to a full pie.
