We also gauged their availability and their responsiveness in handling clients’ requests.

Pros
- Established practice since 1901
- Child-friendly office
- Experienced in handling children’s eye tests
- Offers vouchers for children and people with benefits
- Offers home visits
- Conducts minor repairs
Cons
- Comparatively pricier contact lenses and glasses
- Closed on Mondays, Fridays, and Sundays
As an established practice since 1901, we think Lindsay & Johnson is one of the top opticians in Dundee. We appreciate the fact that they look after the eyesight of up to three generations’ worth of families in the local area.
Unlike other offices, they actually have a child-friendly set-up. They have a dedicated toy-area set up in their office to help kids feel more comfortable.
They are also highly-experienced in handling children’s eye tests. This is great news for those with children that might be a tad finicky or painfully shy.
For those looking to save a few quid, they do offer vouchers for children and people with benefits such as seniors or key workers. We appreciate this since not all opticians offer such discounts.
Another unique service they offer are home or domiciliary visits. This is such a great help for those who are homebound.
They are also capable of repairing minor damages to your eyeglasses. For more complicated repairs, they’ll be able to send them to one of their skilled laboratories.
A downside is that they have comparatively pricier contact lenses and glasses. However, they pride themselves on only selling high-quality frames and lenses that can last longer than your average, entry-level eyewear.
Also, unlike other offices, they are closed on Mondays, Fridays, and Sundays. Thus, it might be harder to book a schedule with them since they are only open 4 days a week.

Pros
- Open all week
- Offers OCT Scans
- Has DVLA eye tests
- Also accepts NHS-funded eye tests
- Always has various promotions and offers
- Also offers hearing-related products and services
Cons
- Reports of sales staff being rude
- Pricey designer glasses
If you have a busy schedule and are looking for an optician service that is open all week, then Specsavers Opticians and Audiologists might be the best option for you.
Unlike other offices, they offer an Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scan. This allows them to see what’s going on beneath the surface of the eye, thus providing more information than a regular eye test.
They also conduct Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) eye tests, which is great for those applying for a driver’s licence. This will help in assessing whether individuals pass the minimum visual requirement to ensure safe driving on the roads.
For those that have National Health Service (NHS) coverage, you’d be happy to know that they accept NHS-funded eye tests.
Not only do they accept NHS coverage, they also offer various promotions and offers. These include 25% off glasses for students and 20% off glasses for those over 60.
For those who also want their hearing checked as well, they also offer hearing-related products and services. They sell invisible and rechargeable hearing aids, and they even offer free hearing tests!
Unfortunately, we heard reports of sales staff being rude. Some clients were made to feel unwelcome in their store, so they ended up going somewhere else.
Also, their designer glasses are priced a bit higher than the designer glasses in other optician offices, even though they are the same brand.

Pros
- Has over 30 years of experience
- Offers several permanent discounts
- Very wide range of products and services
- Free 100 day returns guarantee
- Free lifetime servicing
- Offers an OCT 3D Scan
Cons
- A bit pricier than other shops
- Reports of incorrect prescriptions
Vision Express Opticians has over 30 years of experience, and we think this is why they’ve become a go-to optician service in Dundee.
Aside from their vast experience, they also offer several permanent discounts, which is great for those on a tight budget. For instance, they give a 50% discount off your 2nd pair, 20% student discounts, 20% for key workers and NHS.
We were also impressed by their very wide range of products and services. For example, they offer glasses below 50, luxury glasses, 7 different brands of contact lenses, and various accessories such as anti-fog products and glass cases.
We like the free 100-day returns guarantee they offer which other offices do not have. If you change your mind about a pair of glasses, you can return them with the receipt within 100 days, and they will exchange or refund your purchase.
Another cool service they offer that is not being offered elsewhere is their lifetime servicing. This includes minor repairs and replacements at no extra cost such as nose pad replacements, frame adjustments, screw tightening, or glass cleaning.
They also have an OCT 3D Scan. This can provide a more detailed understanding of your eye health, and it costs only £10 while this service is priced higher in other offices.
A downside is even though their scan is cheaper, their range of glasses is comparatively a bit pricier. You can get the same quality of eyeglasses at lower price points elsewhere.
We also heard reports of incorrect prescriptions wherein clients had to buy another set of glasses.

Pros
- Has nearly 50 years of experience
- Has a wide range of eye care services
- Offers Smart Employee Eyecare
- Offers Colorimetry
- Has an Optomap service
- Has a Complete Contact Care package
Cons
- Long wait times
- Limited range of eye products
- Closed on Sundays
Having nearly 50 years of experience under its belt, it can be said that Duncan and Todd Opticians and Hearing Care knows the ins and outs of this industry.
This can be seen from the wide range of eye care services they offer, and some of their services are not being offered elsewhere.
First, they have a Smart Employee Eyecare service, which other offices do not offer. This includes eyecare solutions that help businesses across the UK and Ireland satisfy Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) legislation requirements.
Another unique service they offer is colorimetry. They test your eyes for visual stress, and then they offer coloured lenses to be worn in spectacles in order to help mitigate this condition.
For those who want to check for early signs of retinal disease, they also have Optomap. They use the Optos scanning laser technology to provide a digital image of the retina that provides 65% more information than standard retinal imaging.
For those wearing contact lenses, we also like their Complete Contact Care package that not all offices offer.
This package includes unlimited Contact Care appointments, 50% off prescription glasses, free home delivery every 3 months, free replacement lenses (monthly and daily), and free contact lens solution (for monthly lenses).
Sadly, we heard that the wait times in their offices are quite long. Apparently, clients have complained that even though they had scheduled appointments, they still had to wait for half an hour.
Compared to other optician offices, they also have a more limited range of eyeglasses and contact lenses. Thus, there might be a chance they won’t have exactly what you are looking for in terms of style.

Pros
- Has over 30 years of experience
- Has over 100 clinics across the UK
- Offers free consultation
- Free children’s glasses
- Offers Focimetry, Refraction, and Autorefraction
- Has an Oculus Pentacam machine
- Also offers eye surgery.
Cons
- Open only 2 days a week
- Reports of wrong prescriptions
Optical Express Laser Eye Surgery is another clinic which has over 30 years of experience. In fact, they have over 100 clinics across the UK, which speaks to their expertise in optician services.
First off, they offer free consults unlike other offices. You can also book your free consultation online, which we think is highly-convenient.
Also, unlike other offices, they offer free children’s glasses. Children up to the age of 16 can choose designer frames for free which we appreciate, since this will help parents save money.
They also offer eye services such as focimetry, refraction, and autorefraction. These value-added services are not being offered elsewhere.
For those who feel that they might have serious eye conditions, you’d be glad to know that they have an Oculus Pentacam machine. It measures the corneal surface and the corneal thickness of your eyes, allowing for a more accurate analysis.
Unlike other offices that only have opticians and optometrists, this office also has ophthalmologists who can perform eye surgeries. For those planning to have LASIK or cataract surgeries, this would be a good option for you.
Sadly, they are only open two days a week, so you would need to book an appointment well in advance.
Also, we heard reports of wrong prescriptions being made for glasses. Some clients complained about repeatedly waiting for reorders since they had to send back those with incorrect prescriptions.
