Pros
- Family-run store which opened in 1977
- 2022’s Best Regional Independent Store in Scotland
- Offers free samples
- Newsletter contains promotions and discount codes
- Has high-quality designer fabrics
- Provides a curtain-making service
Cons
- Longer delivery lead times
- Comparatively pricier fabrics
Mandors Fabric Store is a family-run store which opened in 1977, hence their catchy slogan ‘Fabric Heaven since ‘77.’ Their almost-50 years of experience made them one of the go-to fabric shops in Glasgow.
In fact, they just won 2022’s British Sewing Awards as the Best Regional Independent Store in Scotland. This distinction shows how committed they are to their work.
We like how they offer 10 free fabric samples, while others require payment for samples. However, if you require more than 10, there will be a charge of £2.50 per 5 samples – which isn’t bad at all.
We also appreciate their newsletter that always contains promotions and discount codes. All you need to do is sign up online, and you’re good to go.
For those who prefer high-quality designer fabrics, we think this shop would be worth a visit. They carry fabric collections by ILiv, Voyage, Prestigious, Clarke and Clarke, Harlequin, Designers Guild, and Sanderson, just to name a few.
In addition, those who are buying fabrics for curtains can actually have them made in the shop as well. They provide a curtain-making service, which is highly-convenient for some.
Unfortunately, they have higher delivery lead times than other shops. For instance, orders are processed within 1- 4 business days, and there is an additional 3-4 days for delivery.
Also, since most of their fabrics are branded and of high-quality, they tend to be priced at higher price points compared to the fabrics in other shops.

Pros
- Open all week
- More affordable fabrics
- Wide selection of zippers
- Shorter turnaround times for fabric delivery
- Offers various online promos and discounts
Cons
- Comparatively limited types of fabrics
- Does not carry fabric from designer labels
- Reports of rude sales staff
We think Fabric Bazaar is another top Glasgow-based fabric shop. What sets them apart is that they are open all week, unlike other shops.
Also, their fabrics are priced at lower price points compared to the fabrics in other shops which have the same quality, except for the branded ones. For instance, their plain 100% cotton fabric is priced at only £1.99 per metre.
Those who will be making their own outfits from scratch would find their wide selection of zippers quite helpful. Compared to other shops, they have a wider selection of this item.
In terms of delivery, they seem to have faster lead times as well. Your order can be processed on the same day and can arrive 3-4 working days after dispatch.
For those looking to save money, they also offer various online promos and discounts. Simply go on their website and check which offers would be suitable to your needs and your wallet.
Comparatively, in terms of fabric types, they have a more limited range. For instance, they do not sell chiffon, denim, or jersey fabrics, while other shops do.
Also, they do not carry fabric from designer labels or collections, unlike other shops.
We also heard reports of rude sales staff from customers who were asking about the differences in their online and in-shop pricing. Instead of explaining these differences in a patient manner, they were told rudely to order online instead.

Pros
- Glasgow store opened in 1989
- Offers free parking
- Has seasonal sales
- Carries designer collection fabrics
- Has an Online Fabric Calculator
Cons
- Cannot order fabrics online
- Pricier compared to other shops
- Some staff members reported to be rude
Cotton Print Factory Shop is a fabric store that opened in 1989. Its tenure in the industry has made them one of the top fabric experts in Glasgow.
Unlike other shops, their shop offers free parking, which would be very convenient for car owners and those buying in bulk who have their own van or truck.
They also offer various seasonal promos and sales for those on a tight budget. Do check their website for said promos, which can score you savings from 20% up.
Those who prefer designer collection fabrics would be at-home in this shop. They sell Clark & Clark Collections, Orla Keily fabrics, and authentic furs as well.
You can also use their Online Fabric Calculator if you want to check how much you’d be spending for your chosen fabrics. This will help you in planning and budgeting your expenses.
The downside is that unlike other shops, you cannot order fabrics online, which can be inconvenient for some. You can only browse through their featured fabrics online and then visit their store for the purchase.
Also, due to their designer items, this shop tends to be pricier compared to other shops. For instance, fabrics from the latest Clark & Clark Collections start from £8.95 to £50 per metre.
Lastly, some of their customers experienced rude interactions with their staff. They told us they seemed disinterested in assisting them, and weren’t friendly or accommodating at all.

Pros
- Shop was founded in 2010
- Has a bright, charming shop
- Offers alterations and curtain making services
- Has luxurious fabrics
- Comparatively cheaper prices
Cons
- Limited variety of fabrics
- No delivery services
- Pricey fabric alterations
Gold Thimble was founded in 2010. Having more than 10 years of experience under their belt has made them quite adept in providing Glasgow with their fabric needs.
We actually love their bright, charming shop. Even though it was small, it was quite well-lit; and it had a certain kitschy charm that other shops do not have.
Those who need alteration and curtain-making services would also be happy with this shop, as they provide both. If you bought or made something that doesn’t quite fit, they’d be happy to alter it for you.
They also sell luxurious fabrics that other shops might not have, which are great for making special dresses or gowns. Some of these fabrics are velvet, fleece, and stretch dance fabric.
What’s great is that they sell most of their fabrics at a lower price point compared to other shops. For instance, they sell ice velvet at only £10/metre, while other shops that have the same quality sell this exact same fabric at £14/metre and up.
Unfortunately, due to the small size of the shop, they do have a more limited selection of fabrics compared to other bigger shops.
They also do not have delivery services as well, which can be inconvenient for those planning to buy in bulk. They’d need to bring their own car.
Some also mentioned that their alteration services seem to be quite pricey. For instance, a customer had their dress hemmed roughly 1 inch and were charged £95, which we agree was a bit on the high end.

Pros
- Owned by Irish textile specialist Bevan O’Daly
- Known as the Sustainable Fabric Shop in Glasgow
- Sells licenced sustainable fabrics such as EcoVero
- Also carries Tencel twill
- Can use bunny press in the shop for free
- Offers various fabric-related services
Cons
- Accepts only card payments
- Closed from Mondays to Wednesdays
Bawn is quite unique as it is owned by Irish textile specialist Bevan O’Daly, who has a background in Fine Art and Textile Conservation. Thus, we are not surprised that her shop is known as the ‘Sustainable Fabric Shop’ in Glasgow.
In their efforts to help the environment, they sell licenced, sustainable fabrics such as EcoVero, which is not being sold in other shops. This type of fabric is a sustainable viscose made using sustainable wood from controlled sources.
Another unique fabric they sell is Tencel twill. This gorgeous, versatile fabric has amazing draping properties, and it has a subtle sheen as well.
If you are planning to use a bunny press to attach snap fasteners to your dresses, you’d be happy to know that this store lets their customers use theirs for free.
Customers can even join the shop’s workshop and club, which not all shops provide. For those who want to learn or enhance their skills, you can choose to participate in their Modern Quilting Workshop for £45 or their Mending Club for £15.
On top of these options, they offer various services as well. You can have your scissors sharpened for £10 or send for 5 fabric swatches for £2.50.
The downside is this shop accepts only card payments, unlike other shops that accept cash. This could prove to be inconvenient for some who prefer cash payments.
Also, this shop is closed three days a week, from Mondays to Wednesdays, which we do agree is a bit unusual.
