If you’re anything like me, leaving your dog behind is like leaving a piece of your heart at home. It isn’t just hard, it’s heartbreaking. After too many guilt-filled holidays and pestering my mum for updates, I’ve learned the simplest fix: a reliable and trusted dog boarding home.
Here, I get all the updates I need; Sometimes I can even check in on them through the CCTV. They get to make new doggy friends, play all day long, and live their best little dog lives. Believe me, I’ve done my research to ensure my pup gets treated better than I do at most hotels.

PetStay’s best feature? Their tailored matching process that pairs your fur baby with a caterer who fits their personality and routine. The best part? You both can visit the carer’s home beforehand, ensuring a perfect match.
We also like that they’re dog first-aid trained and available 24/7, providing daily photos and updates. Being fully licensed and insured also adds extra peace of mind, which is a huge relief for anxious fur parents like me.
We also appreciate the transparency, with a clear note on what the fee covers. Plus, we find PetStay fairly priced at £33/day for a dog and £50/day for two, covering the arrangement fee and carer’s allowance. Note that the former is non-refundable and non-transferable.
The trade-off? They don’t have any extras like on-site vet support or grooming. Because of that, it may not be the best choice for pets with ongoing medical needs or more complex health requirements.

Mearns Canine Lodge is the place to be for pups that enjoy the finer things in life. A luxury dog-boarding and daycare facility, it sits on a 40-acre estate, complete with modern kennels, spacious gardens, secure play areas, and even fenced paddocks for off-lead walks and play.
We also like that the suites are purpose-built for comfort. Each one is equipped with heated, non-slip flooring, its own small garden, private outdoor access, and calming touches like low light and soft background music. The catch is that there are only 15, so availability is limited.
But here’s the hitch: Your dog has to pass their assessment and temperament test before being accepted. While it’s reassuring that they prioritise safety and compatibility, it doesn’t mean that slots are guaranteed.
And if your dog passes, you’ll need to bring their own food, bedding, and toys, and this is something to keep in mind if you prefer an all-inclusive set-up. But if that isn’t a dealbreaker for you, Mearns is a brilliant pick for dogs with loads of energy to burn.

Best Friends Kennels and Cattery is perfect if your pup loves the great outdoors. A bit of a drive, about 6 miles away from the city centre, this 1.7-acre family-run boarding kennel and cattery has been caring for beloved pets for over 20 years.
We like that there’s plenty of space to roam, both outdoor and indoor, with grass paddocks, paddle pools, and play stations. And for lazy bums or more introverted pups, there are cosy quiet areas too, like sunbathing spots, outdoor cushions, and shaded spaces to relax.
It’s also a plus that Best Friends provides branded wet and dry food, along with bowls and feeding stands, so that’s one less thing to worry about. But if your dog’s on a special diet or just prefers meals from home, you can bring those along too.
Even while the facilities are comfortable, the environment has a more traditional kennel look and feel, which may not suit pets who are accustomed to home-like settings.
“The BEST kennels we have ever used, our dog does not like to be left anywhere other than Valley. From the welcoming staff to the underfloor heating, the walls and the chance for her to play with other dogs, they are excellent. We can see the pictures of our pet on social media while we are on holiday and she always looks happy and contented. The daycare facilities look just as exceptional as the boarding. “Ramsay has had many “holidays” at Valley Kennels for long and short stays. He is always looked after and, in an embarrassing moment, once ran back in when I went to pick him up! The staff are great. He has 2 visits booked for this year and I need to book his 2026 holiday!”

Our favourite thing about Crowbank Kennels & Cattery? Their staff are trained to care for pups with special needs and administer medication, including those with diabetic insulin. While there’s an extra fee, it’s a small price for the peace of mind.
We also love the rural, semi-woodland country setting, as it gives pups a calm and spacious environment to explore and play. While they’re in Glasgow, they’re located all the way out in Cumbernauld, so a bit of extra planning may be needed.
As for their kennels themselves, we liked how clean they were, helping keep pups happy and stress-free, and preventing them from picking up nasty bugs from their neighbours. Their active routine is also a plus, with plenty of walks and stimulating activities to keep dogs engaged.
Food-wise, we appreciate the convenience that wet and dry food options are provided. But if you prefer to bring your own, that works too!

Location looks really good
“Finding a kennel for our sensitive sighthound was a nightmare. After visiting other premises that left us a little traumatised this place was a total god send. They have a clear itinerary which involves plenty walks and even goodnight cuddles. Our dog seemed to love it, he even picked up a new favourite toy, the location looks really good with woodlands and a large fenced pen. All the staff seemed passionate about their job and raved about the time spent with our pup. Would really recommend!!”
