5 Best Coffee Shops in Scotland Worth Skipping the Chains For

Paying nearly four quid for a burnt, lukewarm flat white on a rainy Tuesday should be a criminal offence. I learned that the hard way with a rush-hour cup near the station that tasted more like wet cardboard than coffee.

That’s why I compared roast dates, bean sourcing and brewing gear across Scotland. I wanted to separate the proper roasters from the places coasting on cute decor.

After much research (and palpitations!), I finally found the best coffee shops in Scotland. Check out the best options for your daily ritual or weekend catch-up below!

How much does coffee cost in Scotland?

Coffee in Scotland costs £2.70 to £3.60 for a quick morning espresso. A weekend brunch platter with a specialty latte brings your bill closer to £15.50.

OptionTypical price
Espresso or Americano£2.70 to £3.60
Flat white, latte or cappuccino£3.30 to £4.30
Hot chocolate, matcha or specialty lattes£3.80 to £4.80
Pastries and sweet bakes£2.80 to £4.80
Toasties, paninis and light brunch items£6.50 to £11.00
Full breakfast or hearty brunch platters£11.00 to £15.50

How I Reviewed

Bean sourcing and roast freshness: I checked where each shop buys its green beans and how long beans sit after roasting. Coffee loses its aroma fast, so fresh beans matter as much as where they come from.

Brewing methods: I compared the gear on each counter, from espresso machines to slow filter cones. Different beans shine through different methods, so this shows who suits commuters and who suits connoisseurs.

Atmosphere and seating: I noted the lighting, table layout and noise level at each shop. That shows you where to settle in with a laptop and where to grab and go.

Menu variety: I checked each menu for plant-based milks, cold brews, specialty lattes, and fresh bakes. Not everyone wants a straight black espresso at three in the afternoon.

1. Ottoman Coffeehouse

ottoman-coffeehouse

Website: https://www.ottomancoffeehouse.co.uk/

Address: 73 Berkeley Street, Glasgow

Contact: 0141 588 5982

Hours: Monday: Closed, Tuesday to Friday: 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Saturday to Sunday: 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM

Rushing through a paper cup on the pavement gets old fast. Ottoman Coffeehouse offers the opposite by reviving the coffee culture of 16th-century Istanbul. Low lighting and warm textures create a quiet space where you can read or think for hours.

The signature drink is made in a traditional copper ibrik pot. The pot brings finely ground coffee to a slow simmer until a thick foam forms on top.

If that thick, strong style isn’t for you, they also make V60 pour-overs and siphon brews with rotating beans that score 84+ for quality.

And if you like what you taste, you can buy bags ground for your home setup, so you don’t have to guess the grind size yourself.

That said, they stay closed on Mondays, so a slow historic brew will have to wait until Tuesday.

Pros

  • Traditional copper ibrik brewing
  • V60 pour-over and siphon options
  • Rotating beans scoring 84+
  • Bags ground for your home setup

Cons

  • Closed on Mondays

2. Spitfire Espresso

spitfire-espresso

Website: https://spitfireespresso.com/

Address: 55 High Street, Glasgow

Contact: 07578 250105

Hours: Sunday to Thursday: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Friday to Saturday: 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM

Finding a consistent flat white shouldn’t feel like a gamble. Spitfire Espresso solves that with an aviation-inspired space and their house Gunnerbean blend.

Every shot is pulled on a red La Marzocco FB70 machine, so commuters and tourists exploring the city centre get a reliable, punchy cup every time.

The blend combines beans from the Vila Boa Carbon Neutral farm in Brazil with traceable Colombian cooperatives. When I dropped by for an afternoon latte, the chocolate and nutty notes came through the milk without any sourness.

It’s just as good on its own as a straight shot if you prefer a balanced, classic profile over sharp fruity acidity.

That said, their doors shut at 5 PM from Sunday to Thursday, so an after-work coffee is out.

Pros

  • Exclusive Gunnerbean house blend
  • Chocolate and nutty flavour profile
  • Traceable, carbon-neutral bean sourcing
  • Shots pulled on a La Marzocco FB70 machine

Cons

  • Closes at 5 PM from Sunday to Thursday

Really great coffee and friendly service.

Really great coffee and friendly service. The only downside is they serve iced drinks in hot cups – this is probably just a personal preference though. The coffee is really good and there was never a line when we went in.

3. Artisan Roast Broughton Street

artisan-roast-broughton-street

Website: https://artisanroast.co.uk/

Address: 57 Broughton Street, Edinburgh

Contact: Online shop: [email protected] | Cafes: [email protected]

Hours: Monday to Sunday: 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Stale beans ruin even the fanciest pour-over, which is why Artisan Roast Broughton Street roasts to order at least twice a week. They use several roaster sizes, and no batch leaves the roastery older than the previous working day.

That freshness pays off at the brew bar, where you can compare their Janszoon blend against seasonal single origins on V60 or batch brew. You get crisp flavours that haven’t flattened out in a warehouse bag.

The cafe is no newcomer to specialty coffee either. They won the Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Award in 2012 for their influence on the scene.

If you skip dairy, they pour Moma Oat milk alongside cow’s milk, plus espresso tonics and cold brew when the weather warms up.

That said, the cafe shuts at 4 PM sharp, which cuts afternoon work sessions short for freelancers.

Pros

  • Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Award winner
  • Beans roasted to order twice weekly
  • Single-origin V60 and batch brews
  • Moma Oat milk and cold coffee menu

Cons

  • Closes early at 4 PM

Excellent specialty coffee with two batch brews daily

Excellent specialty coffee with two batch brews daily, and we were generously offered a sample of each before choosing (plus a free refill, which was such a lovely touch). The pastries were sublime: we tried their vegan hazelnut crème croissant, pain au chocolat, and a cinnamon bun – all generously sized, beautifully filled, and absolutely delicious.

The coffee here is fantastic.

Artisan Roast on Broughton Street is one of Edinburgh’s original specialty coffee spots, and it’s always felt like a true community hub. It’s a really arty place too, with cool blackboards and interesting local art everywhere.

The coffee here is fantastic. They roast their own beans, and I love that you can often try different processing methods (washed vs. natural) to really taste the difference. It’s a real treat for coffee lovers.

Pastries are fine, but nothing to write home about. However, their sandwiches are seriously good – loaded with ingredients. The pastrami sandwich is my go-to!

4. XOKO Bakehouse and Cantina

xoko-bakehouse-and-cantina

Website: https://www.xoko.co.uk/

Address: 13 Bridge Street, Inverness

Contact: [email protected]

Hours: Monday to Sunday: 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM

Exploring the Highlands works up an appetite that weak hotel coffee can’t fix. XOKO Bakehouse and Cantina pairs artisan comfort food with an open-plan coffee bar in Inverness.

Community tables and 7 AM starts make XOKO an easy stop for locals and tourists hunting for fresh bake shops and hot drinks before hitting the road.

The coffee itself is worth the stop. They source Rainforest Alliance-certified beans from smallholders using traditional farming methods in Huila, Colombia. They then hand-roast them to bring out chocolate, caramel, and cherry notes.

That Great Taste award-winning roast gives you a rich base even in sweeter drinks.

If you want something stronger after a chilly walk, the menu goes beyond cortados and dirty chai. The list includes an Amaretto Mocha and a spiked Carajillo.

That said, they run on a walk-in basis and don’t take reservations, so grabbing a seat at peak brunch hours takes patience.

Pros

  • Rainforest Alliance certified Colombian beans
  • Hand-roasted with chocolate and cherry notes
  • Open-plan bakehouse with community tables
  • Boozy coffee options like Carajillo

Cons

  • Walk-in only with no reservations

Friendly welcoming staff, nice coffee

Popped in after a long drive from Glasgow for a quick coffee. And couldn’t say no to one of their pastries. Wish I gotten one to take away too. I had a Crispy buttery, flaky, croissant, but soft om the inside.

Friendly welcoming staff, nice coffee

Service was very friendly and quick.

The coffee was great and they were open early which was a huge relief (as someone who had to catch an early train). There was art on the wall and the place has a generally wonderful and inclusive atmosphere.

The location on Inverness river provides lovely views – it’s a genuinely special little walk between the bridges. Service was very friendly and quick.

5. Cult Coffee Roasters

cult-coffee-roasters

Website: https://cultcoffeeroasters.com/

Address: 104 Buccleuch Street, Newington, Edinburgh

Contact: [email protected]

Hours: Monday to Friday: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Saturday to Sunday: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Finding a study spot near campus that takes its beans seriously isn’t always easy. Cult Coffee Roasters has anchored Edinburgh’s Newington neighbourhood since 2014.

This wee cafe sits a short walk from the University of Edinburgh and The Meadows, so students and remote workers can settle in with a laptop.

Once you sit down, you’ll find they rotate origins such as Colombia, Kenya and Ethiopia instead of sticking to one region.

They supply both wholesale and retail customers, so the counter stays well stocked with gear and fresh bags.

That range of gear is handy for students. A friend of mine grabs her AeroPress filters and whole beans here between lectures, so she doesn’t have to order equipment online.

That said, orders need to pass £45 to qualify for free shipping, which is steep if you only want one bag. Beans may also be dispatched up to 10 days after roasting, so buying in the cafe gets you fresher coffee.

Pros

  • Rotating single origins from several countries
  • Short walk from the University of Edinburgh
  • Stocks AeroPress brewers and filters
  • Wholesale and retail bean supply

Cons

  • Free shipping needs a £45 spend
  • Beans may be dispatched up to 10 days after roasting

If you know coffee you’ll appreciate this place.

They recommended a filter coffee, it was really excellent. If you know coffee you’ll appreciate this place.  The food was great, but for the price I’d have liked another slice of toast with my eggs.  One for the Star wars and Coffee fans

this cafe truly is one of my favourite in Edinburgh.

With great food and delicious coffee, this cafe truly is one of my favourite in Edinburgh. The food is flavourful and tasty – I recommend the avocado toast. The coffee is great. Different beans to choose for your pour over with a wonderful selection. I had a geisha and it was spectacular. The ambiance of the cafe is also great. With a rustic interior and funky decor like the Lego Star Wars; they create a cafe that you want to be in. The music is also great. Ah, I love the place.
