Everything You Need to Know about Portsoy in Aberdeenshire

Aberdeenshire’s Portsoy is a hidden gem with its beautiful shores and historic architecture. Local shops and eateries add to the charm, offering everything from fresh seafood to handmade crafts.

It’s got this rich tapestry of history, too, dating back to the 16th century when it was bustling with trade and known for its fine Portsoy marble. These stones have decorated everything from local fireplaces to regal castles

Portsoy is also famous for its annual boat festival, where you can watch traditional crafts in action or just kick back and enjoy some live folk music.

It’s basically one of those places where you half expect to see a pirate ship sail past, adding to the timeless romance of it all.

Where is Portsoy?

portsoy-aberdeenshire-map

Aberdeenshire’s Portsoy is perched on the Moray Firth coast in northeast Scotland—a seriously picturesque location. If you’re road-tripping, it’s about 50 miles northwest of Aberdeen and 65 miles east of Inverness, nestled right in between.

Driving up to Portsoy is half the fun, with all those rolling hills and stunning sea views. Once you get there, you’ll know you’re in the right spot when you see its charming harbour.

How to Get to Aberdeenshire’s Portsoy

Closest bus and subway stop: You can grab a train to Keith from Aberdeen, and from Keith, you can catch a local bus to Portsoy. The bus ride isn’t too long and gives you some nice views along the way.

If you’re driving, just head northwest from Aberdeen on the A96 and then take the A95 towards Banff; it’s about an hour and a half drive through some gorgeous Scottish countryside.

Alternatively, if you’re coming from Inverness, take the A96 east, then swing onto the A98, which takes about two hours.

Best Time to Go to Aberdeenshire’s Portsoy

The best time to visit Aberdeenshire’s Portsoy is during the summer months, especially if you’re interested in catching the Scottish Traditional Boat Festival. This event usually takes place in late June.

It’s a fantastic opportunity to see historic boats, enjoy some local music, and try out some delicious Scottish seafood. Seriously, the whole town gets involved, and the atmosphere is just electric.

If you’re not into festivals, summer is still a great time to visit because the weather is at its best, making it perfect for exploring the scenic coastal trails and historic sites around Portsoy.
