  • Offers energy-efficient homes
  • Can pre-reserve your dream home online
  • Has an options visualizer
  • Comprehensive aftersales support
  • Assisted move package
  • Has a part exchange scheme

With over 85 years of experience, we think Miller Homes already knows the ins and outs of building new homes. In fact, they were named Housebuilder of the Year in 2020 by Insider’s Residential Property Awards as proof of their prowess.

They offer energy-efficient new homes that can potentially save homeowners more than £2,200 annually on energy bills, providing long-term cost savings.

You can also pre-reserve your dream home online before it’s available to others, ensuring you have the first pick.

After doing so, you can choose finishing touches to personalise your new home using their options visualizer, adding a unique touch to your property.

Their comprehensive aftersales support includes check-ins at one week, one month, one year, and two years after purchase. We appreciate their efforts to satisfy their customers.

Miller Homes even offers an assisted move package, simplifying the process of selling your current home when moving into one of their properties.

For those looking to trade in their homes for newer ones, the company has a part exchange scheme on selected plots and developments. This makes the transition to a new Miller home more straightforward without chains or estate agent fees.

Unfortunately, some new homeowners have reported issues with repairs, such as leaking windows, which required multiple repair attempts.

A few customers have also expressed dissatisfaction with customer relations. The ones we’ve spoken with cited instances of what they consider to be unreasonable or unrealistic expectations and tactics.

  • Offers interior design packages

Established in 2017, Briar Homes is the private homes subsidiary of A S Homes, a reputable Glasgow-based housebuilder. They’re known for delivering high-quality social housing.

We appreciate the accolades they’ve received. Briar Homes has been a finalist in the Best of Scotland’s New Build Sector at the Scottish Home Awards in 2022, marking three consecutive years of acknowledgment in the industry.

The company is dedicated to preserving the natural environment around its developments. This includes safeguarding trees, watercourses, and local wildlife.

Their efforts encompass biodiversity, planning controls, as well as creating walking, cycling, and trail paths. These landscapes would likely remain accessible and enjoyable for generations due to their efforts.

We also admire their collaboration with the Housing Growth Partnership. Meaning, they help support regional residential development communities to increase the number of new homes in the UK, increasing housing affordability.

In addition, Briar Homes offers interior design packages that cover flooring, window dressings, and light fittings, making it easier to create a personalised living space.

They provide an assisted move scheme on selected plots for a limited time, simplifying the process of selling your current home when purchasing one of their properties.

Do note that some customers have reported issues with communication and responsiveness, which can be a source of frustration during the home-buying process.

A few customers we spoke to also mentioned encounters with aggressive sales and management staff, which they did not appreciate.

  • Award-winning
  • 98 years of experience
  • Offers guaranteed entry dates
  • Has a ‘Seal of Approval’
  • Each client has a dedicated Sales Consultant
  • Staff undergoes ICS training
  • Offers the Early Bird Option

Cons

  • Delayed after-sales service
  • Pricey

Mactaggart & Mickel Homes, awarded Housebuilder of the Year in 2022 at the Scottish Home Awards, has a rich legacy of crafting luxury homes since 1925. As a fourth-generation family business, we think they’re a solid option.

First off, they offer guaranteed entry dates, ensuring a smooth move-in experience for homebuyers.

Their commitment to quality is underlined by the ‘Seal of Approval’ – a final quality check on every Mactaggart & Mickel home before new owners move in. This rigorous quality control standard is a testament to their stringent construction standards.

Throughout the home-buying journey, purchasers have a dedicated Sales Consultant as a one-point-of-contact. Having a dedicated contact person helps buyers receive a seamless and personalised service.

Speaking of service, their customer service is backed by membership in the Institute of Customer Service (ICS) and ICS training for Sales Consultants. This makes sure that their homebuyers are given a superior and well-informed service experience.

For those eager to secure their dream home, they offer the Early Bird Option on selected plots and developments. This unique feature allows buyers to reserve a plot, confirm a price, and anticipated entry date within six months.

However, we heard from their former customers about delays in repairing damaged drains after storms, indicating room for improvement in their after-sales service.

Also, as specialists in luxury homes, their offerings may lean toward the higher end of the pricing spectrum, which could be a consideration for budget-conscious buyers.

Pros

  • Over three decades of experience
  • Contemporary design
  • Develops only a select number of new homes
  • Offers post-construction services
  • Has an NHBC 10-Year Warranty
  • Provides an Essential New Home pack

Cons

  • Reports of workmanship quality
  • Communication issues

Westpoint Homes has a remarkable track record, spanning over three decades of crafting quality new homes in some of Scotland’s most sought-after locations. They’re also known for their uniquely designed contemporary developments.

What sets them apart is their annual development approach, where they only build a select number of new homes. This allows them to maintain the high standards they’ve set for themselves, ensuring that each home is something truly special.

We also admire their meticulous post-construction services. For a generous 28-day period following the handover of your new home, their Site Manager becomes your primary point of contact for addressing any snagging items identified in your property.

Furthermore, around 12 months after your entry date, their Customer Care team invites you to list any defective items for consideration under the NHBC 10-Year Warranty.

In your Essential New Home pack provided by them, you’ll find emergency call-out numbers for after-hours and holiday situations. This demonstrates Westpoint Homes’ commitment to your peace of mind.

While they deliver on many fronts, some customers have expressed concerns about workmanship quality, particularly related to plumbing issues.

There have also been complaints of communication challenges, delays, and perceived indifference from some staff members, especially at the head office. Addressing these areas could help elevate the overall customer experience.

Pros

  • Over 20 years in the business
  • Most clients come from word-of-mouth
  • Handles the whole home construction process
  • Offers project management
  • Also offers interior design services
  • Surveys potential building sites with clients
  • Pays attention to budget constraints
  • Has partnership with kitchen and bathroom suppliers

Cons

  • Reports of communication and attitude issues
  • Slow turnaround time

Founded by Dene and Debbie Happell in 2002, nest is a homebuilder that proclaims to have a profound love for design and a particular affinity for contemporary aesthetics.

They claim that a significant portion of their new business arises from recommendations made by highly satisfied customers, which we think is quite impressive.

We also like their comprehensive approach to home construction. They oversee the entire process, from initial design and specifications to architectural services, including drawings and permissions.

They provide comprehensive project management of builds, employing only high-quality tradespeople. Plus, they offer interior design services for those who want cohesive and stylish living spaces.

Unlike other firms, they place a significant emphasis on client engagement and early communication. For instance, they actively initiate a dialogue with clients, which often begins with accompanying them to potential building sites.

Nest also helps clients realise the full potential of their spaces while adhering to budget constraints.

Their collaborative approach to design extends to partnerships with leading kitchen and bathroom suppliers, such as Beautiful Kitchens and BuildIt.

After speaking with their former clients, we heard about communication issues that emerged. For instance, when questions regarding additional charges were raised, there were instances of combative and defensive responses from Dene, the founder.

Also, clients have noted that the pre-award process can be quite time-consuming, taking nearly a year to complete. This included multiple discussions, site visits, and financial investments, which could be a bit slow for some.
