The Merchants House Cafe is a charming, family-run coffee shop within the historic 16th-century A-listed Merchant’s House in Laws Close. The place serves a delightful selection of sandwiches, cakes, and delicious coffee, making it a favourite among locals and visitors.

A fascinating fact about the cafe is that it opened its doors in October 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Even then, it quickly became a cherished spot, earning accolades such as Best New Coffee Shop and recognition as one of the top 20 family businesses in the UK.

I especially love their afternoon tea as it’s so tasty and the portions are so generous. Their breakfast items are also a favourite, such as their creamy porridge with a choice of milk and hearty vegan sausage baps.

Pro Tip: The outdoor seating is particularly great for enjoying a lovely meal with your pooch.

The cosiest wee cafe I’ve ever been to, I find myself here every weekend, not just for the delicious food, but also for the fantastic prices. It’s such a great deal that I always bring my nan and pop along, knowing they love a good bargain just as much as I do.

Pop’s a bit of an adventurer when it comes to his grub, so he’ll always go for the soup of the day. It’s a surprise every time, but he’s never been let down yet. He also gets their Pulled Pork Panini with Cheese & Jalapenos, an absolute belter.

Nan, on the other hand, sticks to what she knows, her favourite Ham Hock & Lentil Soup, every single time, with a proper cup of tea to finish it off.

Pro Tip: There’s a ton of free parking nearby, making it easy to stop in without much hassle.

I’m a true latte lover. I just can’t resist the creaminess and rich but mellow coffee flavour. When my cravings hit, my go-to spot is always Café Wynd. When I’m looking for something special, I’m always down to try their unique twist, such as their Matcha Latte and Oat Cappuccino, which is definitely a must-try.

But it’s not just the lattes that keep me coming back. Their food is just as incredible. Their perfectly golden French Toast, indulgent Chocolate & Hazelnut Tart, juicy Chicken Caesar Salad, and flavorful Devilled Eggs Toast are all absolute must-orders.

It’s the perfect spot to meet friends for brunch. And if your friends can’t make it, no worries, it’s dog-friendly, too!

Pro Tip: There are a ton of options for vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free diets on the menu, but if you have any special requests, be sure to let them know in advance.

A cozy cafe and one of my favourite takeaway spots, The Fix Fife offers a lovely range of freshly prepared food and drinks. I’m especially fond of their sausage and red onion bagel for a savoury bite and their oat milk chai latte, both absolutely spot on.

It’s also one of my go-to spots for brunch with friends, thanks to its laid-back vibe. They’ve got loads of brunch-style bites like toasties and bagels, along with some vegetarian and gluten-free options as well.

I also enjoy popping in when I need to get a bit of work done. It’s a fairly small space, so it’s best for checking emails, reading over coffee, or having a quick 1:1 catch-up as it’s got that friendly, low-key feel that makes it easy to settle in without feeling rushed.

Pro Tip: Get there early if you can, especially on the weekends, as it’s a popular spot among locals and tourists alike, so the best bakes and toasties tend to sell out fast.

Another charming entry is Coast Coffee, a quaint family-run shop that is one of my favourites, especially for their cracking weekend specials. I’m particularly fond of their Hot Smoked Salmon served with a refreshing salad as well as their Strawberry Toffee Pie, which always hits the spot when I’m after a sweet treat.

The cafe’s got free Wi-Fi, now isn’t that just grand? I’ll sometimes nip in to do some light work, though it isn’t ideal for hunkering down all day, especially during peak cafe hours. Good luck finding a seat!

That said, it’s still a great place to have casual meetings as there are indoor and outdoor seating options available. I’ll often sit out with my pup, just watching the world go by and people watching.

Pro Tip: Keep an eye out for their traybakes and sweet treats, as locals know to grab their favourites before they disappear.

One of my favourite spots for brunch has to be R&S Bistro just off High Street. It’s a cracking wee place with a brilliant mix of Portuguese, Latin American, and Scottish flavours. Not something you come across every day!

I’m a big fan of their breakfast burrito, proper hearty and just the thing to set you up for a busy day. Their root vegetable quiche is another go-to of mine. It’s veggie, aye, but still full of flavour that you can’t even tell!

When it comes to drinks, I’ve got a soft spot for their hot chocolates, especially in the winter. Come summer, though, I’m all about their tropical boost, which is a refreshing blend of papaya, mango, pineapple, and orange juice. It’s pure sunshine in a glass if you ask me!

Pro Tip: They’ve got free Wi-Fi and comfy seating if you fancy doing a bit of work.

Rankin’s Cafe is one of those proper gems–family run, full of charm, and well-loved by locals and visitors. I’ve been going for years, whether it’s for a laid-back brunch with pals or a cosy afternoon tea with my mum.

As for their offerings, you won’t go wrong with their soup of the day. Always hearty, always spot on. And if you’ve got a sweet tooth like me, their home-baked goods are not to be missed! Scones, cakes, pastries, you’ll be spoilt for choice!

Their drinks are just as good. They use proper speciality coffee beans, freshly roasted, so the espresso-based drinks have a real kick to them. Just the way I like it—strong but smooth.

Pro Tip: It can get quite busy, especially around lunchtime or on the weekends, so I’d definitely recommend phoning in ahead to book a table.

Another lovely wee spot that’s a favourite among locals is the Café in the Square. Tucked right in the heart of St Andrews, it’s just a stone’s throw away from some of the town’s main sights, which is exactly why I bring friends from abroad here. It’s a brilliant place to take a breather and refuel while exploring.

Lunch is always the highlight for us. Their soup of the day never disappoints, especially when paired with one of their hearty sandwiches. You can’t go wrong with that combo!

It’s also a top spot if you’ve got your dog with you. They’re properly dog-friendly and even offer biscuits for the pups. Plus, there’s outdoor seating where you can enjoy your cuppa with a nice view of the square.

Pro Tip: If the soup of the day’s on the board early, order it straight away as it’s a local favourite and can easily sell out during busy lunch hours.

Cinnamon swirl buns. Cheese scones. Smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels. Honestly, ugh! I can’t wait to get back to the Giddy Gannet. It’s another brilliant wee café, tucked along Station Road, and it’s no surprise it’s so highly rated.

The place has a cracking mix of homemade dishes and bakes, both savoury and sweet, and the drinks are just as good. Whatever it is, it’s a great spot for a slow afternoon, especially if you can nab a table at their outdoor area with a fantastic view of the pier.

Pro Tip: If you’re feeling indecisive, go for one of their scones. They’ve got a ton of flavors such as Spicy Fifer, Scone Fishing, Wee Porker, Dill & Caper, Hot Smoked Salmon, Cream Cheese, Bacon, Scrambled Egg, Cheese, and even Chilli Jam.

Kitschenbake is a multi-award-winning, family-run café and bakeshop that’s all about artisanal, small-batch goodness. Hence, everything’s made fresh to order, so if you’ve got your eye on one of the local favourites, best get in early as they don’t tend to stick around for long!

A couple of must-tries? Their brownies are legendary–rich, indulgent, and essential if you’re even remotely into chocolate. Their scones are spot-on too, especially alongside a proper cuppa. If you’re more into u, the sausage rolls and cheese boards don’t disappoint either.

Got your dog with you? They’re warmly welcomed, and you can even order them a puppacino while you crack on with some work. There’s free Wi-Fi, and it’s a great place if you need to get your head down for a bit, though I’ll admit, it’s easy to get distracted with the cosy vibes and lovely view of the River Tay.

Pro Tip: For any special occasions lined up, Kitschnbake also does bespoke cakes and afternoon tea arrangements. Simply drop them a message!
